About 2 months ago, while walking through Walmart, my wife informed me that she wanted to buy a $120 tent to go camping. The thought of spending $120 for a tent to sleep on the ground just didn’t appeal to me me but the ADD in me saw the need for a project. I had this old 4x8 4-wheeler trailer sitting in the back yard that I have thought of turning into an adventure trailer and now looked like the time! I wish I had started taking pictures sooner and more often because once I got started photography was not a thought. The first picture is after I had done an axle flip and changed out the 13” tires for a pair of 205 75 15 tires to get it off the ground and built a rack to support a rooftop tent. 2 days later I found a Smittybuilt overlander xl gen 2 rooftop tent on marketplace and by that afternoon there was no going back!

I needed somewhere to put a battery, and a tounge box seemed appropriate, but I also wanted a 12v refrigerator and a on board water tank so I constructed a 4’x4’x20” enclosed compartment and a thick layer of Herculiner was sprayed on it to protect it. A 100ah lifepro4 battery was installed.

I need a table for my cooking area so I built a 5’ folding cooktop out of pine and treated it with tung oil for weather resistance

Ditch lights were wired on all corners and rock lights underneath

An 8’x7’ awning was attached along with a 53qt 12v refrigerator which slides out on a pair of 28” drawer sliders

Rear stabilizers were made out of 1/4“ angle iron and a ratchet strap.

at this point I haven’t gotten the water tank but 4 5 gallon water jugs will do just fine for now..

Also added a 40 amp dc to dc charger with 100 watt solar panel, a 1500 watt power inverter and a 5kw diesel heater..

Perfect timing to enjoy the fall weather!

Fantastic, man. This gives me a few ideas for updating mine. Mostly that folding table!😉

Amazing build but the important question is does your wife like it? Her idea after all. Will you put fenders on it?

The wife likes it so far but let’s see how that goes when she has to pee at three in the morning… Lol
I probably will put flat fenders on it at some point and a small running board at the back to attach 5 pound propane bottle to…

That is a great build! You set that up nice for future additions. If you haven’t found one already, an RV water tank, on demand pump and a faucet would fit right in. Get a propane stove and the kitchen is complete.
If the 3 am pees become an issue, I bet you can integrate one of those pop up changing rooms/ bathrooms from a pontoon boat.
How do you like the 12v fridge? Been thinking of getting one.

Not sure how well that would work as I haven’t used it, I guess it would depend on use and gallons you want.
We have an RV and the ‘wobble diaphragm’ pumps are real hardy. Good pressure and can run dry. They typically have a built in pressure switch, so just turn on automatically when you open a tap. I replaced one, took old one apart, realizing it wasn’t my problem, but was impressed with design. You could get a variety tank sizes for RVs. 15, 20 gallon, to fit your needs. Then just plumb up however you want with PEx. Just a thought and I think would be worth considering.

Love the fridge, no problem in keeping food and drinks cold… I've already installed a 30 gal water tank along with an on demand pump and a quick disconnect hose and sprayer located by the fold down counter top… purchased a propane stove also… pretty much have everything we need is on the trailer except for food and drinks for the outing and clothes… just need the weather and my wife to cooperate!

Sounds like you’ve done everything possible short of mixing the drinks for her. You've gone way beyond just a tent.
Hope you have a great time!
