Intermittent issues

Hey, everyone.
I have been having some intermittent issues with my 1997 4.0 Manual TJ since June. I could really use some help.
Sometimes it runs great, sometimes it runs really rough. Sometimes when I am coming to a stop, take my foot off the gas, put it in neutral, it idles very rough and the RPMS and fuel pressure drop until the check gauges light comes on. Sometimes the RPMs rise as if it is opening the throttle all by itself. Sometimes when I’m driving and my foot is on the gas I can feel the Jeep stutter and hesitate like it’s coughing. Sometimes when I try and start it, it takes a very long time (2-6 cranks) to start. Sometimes when I try and start it, it backfires loudly like a gunshot. Sometimes when I try and start it, it starts, but if I take my foot off the gas it stalls immediately. However, sometimes it runs great and smooth. I can’t seem to find any rhyme or reason. It doesn’t matter if it’s a cold start or if it’s been running for hours.

Things that I’ve done to try and fix it:
Replace the fuel pump
Clean the throttle body and IAC.
Replace the IAC valve- twice.
Replace the upstream oxygen sensor
Replace the fuel injectors
Replace the MAP sensor
Replaced my brake booster to fix a vacuum leak.
I think I replaced another sensor at the same time but I don’t remember what it was.

I hooked up a code scanner a few days ago and I didn’t get any codes.

Today I used the key dance method and got the following codes: 12 27 27 27 43 27 21 52 55.

Currently it’s in the garage with the battery disconnected. Hopefully that will clear the codes and then I’ll drive it for a bit and check again. I also want to check the fuel pressure, but currently I don’t have a gauge to do it.
Maybe I just bought crappy fuel injectors or something. I don’t know.

I’m really at a loss here. Please give any thoughts you may have- it’s my daily and currently I don’t feel good or trusting enough about driving anywhere.

Thanks.

Reconnected the battery- ran it for a bit, key dance just gave 12 and 55.
Got a scanner, now I have codes:

P0172 System Too Rich (Bank 1)

P0138 02 Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)

Check the voltages on your two O2 sensors...they should stay under .9v.

Any exhaust leaks? My 97 had a cracked exhaust header and it would run rich because it wasn't all making it to the O2 sensor.

Forgive me for asking: all of the basic maintenance items (plugs/wires/distributor cap/rotor) are in good condition? Is the engine coolant temp sensor within operating range? Wiring to O2 sensors is intact between the sensor and the main wiring loom? All vacuum lines are in good condition?

As far as I can tell everything looks good.

These are all good suggestions.
My mind is going to more basic things like cleaning the air filter and verifying the battery is healthy (or connecting a fresh one to check). I’d check plug gaps and condition too; maybe replace if they’re old just in case there’s a crack in the ceramic. You might also try some fresh higher octane gas just to see if it behaves any differently. Hope you figure it out!

This sure feels IAC related.

Have you inspected the wiring around each of the sensors & their plugs? I'm the guy who always thinks it's wiring.....because a lot of times it is wiring. :)

Just wanted to update y’all. After months of trouble shooting, apparently the injectors that were on it were cheap injectors from Amazon. I found a girl parting out her 97 4.0 in South Carolina and she mailed me 6 OEM fuel injectors for $50. Since swapping the injectors to OEM, the Jeep has run great! The only problem is that the gas hose that goes to the fuel rail popped off after a day or two of driving... I put it back on and haven’t had issues since. But keeping tabs on it that fuel line!

Reactions: hear
That's great to hear. It's super frustrating to have a replaced part be the cause of an issue. Sensors are fairly easy to bench test, but I don't know how you test a fuel injector (not that I've looked, either).
