I just received a remanufactured 42RLE from Best Buy Transmissions. I'm getting ready to install the Rubicrawler on it and noticed something that wasn't on my old transmission.

The pic with my hand in it is the new transmission. I am pointing at a metal tab that hooks into that hole and the tab extends down into the pan.

My old transmission doesn't have that tab.

Does anyone know what that tab is? Is it supposed to be there?

I'm confused by your description, "tab that hooks into a hole" isn't anything my brain can process. :). It sounds like you're saying it's a hole that is open to the pan? Can you take a better close-up and also from the pan side?

I posted better pics of the tab. Hopefully that helps show what I am talking about

oh yeah, not only did you describe it well, I'm completely confused as to what that is/does. What does it look like from the other side?

I’d call Best Buy Transmissions

What’s that stamp on your hand. I looked at both of mine, I don’t have one.

The stamp is from my local u-pull- -pay. I went to u-pull-n pay to get a transmission pan. On my failed transmission I had just replaced the pan with one that had a drain plug and I didn’t want to send the core back with a brand new pan on it.

I’d have to pull the pan to see. And even then I might not be able to see it because the valve body will probably be in the way.

I sent Best Buy an email yesterday and will call them first thing Monday. I really don’t want to tear into the transmission until I get some confirmation what that tab is.

BTW here is a pic of a 42RLE from Powertrain Products and it clearly shows the tab.

Chris I want a stamp that says I’ve been on here.

After looking at the parts manual and watching a number of 42RLE rebuild videos, here is my thoughts on this. (see attached pic). There is a roll pin that the parking sprag sits on. I believe when the transmissions are originally built that this pin is staked in on the rear of the transmission and it appears it takes quite a bit of effort to pound it out. I'm thinking the tab in my new transmission is a retainer for that roll pin to make sure it doesn't back out the hole.

"On certain 2005-06 Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler pickup trucks, SUVs and passenger vehicles equipped with 42RLE automatic transmissions, the cup plug that retains the park pawl anchor shaft may be improperly installed. If the shaft moves out of position, the vehicle may not be able to achieve its “park” position, in which case a vehicle could roll away and cause a crash without warning. Transtar recommends installing this bracket (Transtar part number D162915-3) to ensure the park pawl anchor shaft stays in the proper position."
