New Truck Discussion

I am just happy I picked up a tailgate years ago.

I have an EcoDiesel Gladiator for my daily, I like it. Lots of torque, scoots right along on stock gears and 37s. Pulls my TJ without breaking a sweat. 440 lb-ft stock, 500+ with a tune. Bulletproof ZF-built 8HP75 trans. It's a controversial truck/jeep and that just makes me like it more. I wouldn't spend the asking price on a gasser JT, imo. For that matter I wouldn't pay anywhere near MSRP for a diesel one either, truck prices are insane. I got mine for $10k below sticker/7% below invoice.

Obviously it is very much a compromise over a dedicated full size truck. But, I take it on long wheeling trips in the mountains, get decent mileage commuting, take it camping, and it still does basic truck stuff like towing the TJ well enough. And it makes cool sounds.

I did install AEV High Capacity diesel coils to handle all the extra weight I haul around.

In regards to all the oil change talk with diesels, Stellantis/VM Motori say every 10k miles on the the EcoD I believe, but I started out changing it at 5k and sending samples off to Blackstone for analysis and have since pushed the interval out to 7k miles on synthetic. These manufacturers 10k mile suggestions do seem a bit optimistic. They only really need the engine to last reliably past the warranty period, after all.

Good to see you're able to tow your Jeep on a trailer with the JT Diesel. I posted on the RAM forum and someone there is saying that I shouldn't be able to tow my Jeep on a trailer even with the RAM 5.7 V8 even if I got the 3.92 gears, which is a bit discouraging.

Weird. Yeah, I just lock out 8th gear and it cruises down the highway in 7th, even with the factory 3.73s and 37s. At 65mph it'll get 14.5 mpg towing the TJ all day.

Some folks have had issues with it de-rating at high altitude and steep grades, on hot days, and usually pulling trailers with large frontal areas. I haven't towed with it in the mountains yet, and it sounds like it's usually people just asking more out of it than they realistically should, but something to keep in mind if you go that route.

The Jeep engineers themselves have said the tow ratings for the Gladiator EcoD are based upon cooling limitations, not chassis or power limitations.

It’s the payload capacity that usually creates the problem.

Surely the Ram has higher ratings than the JT though? I've had mine on a scale loaded with the TJ on the heavy uhaul trailer and it's just within payload/gross axle/tow. I have certainly towed over GCWR though once loaded with people/gear but imo it all goes out the window when you modify any single part of the drivetrain anyway.

All depends on the spec and it depends on what’s being pulled.

For instance your gladiator has a payload of like 1100 lbs.

Your Jeep may weigh 4500 lbs so 10% is 450 lbs is typical tongue weight.

A uhaul trailer is about 2k so add another 200 lbs in tongue weight.

I see a rooftop tent, no idea what it weighs but let’s say 200 lbs.

So we are at 850 lbs of your 1100 lb payload with no passengers or other gear.

Hopefully you are skinny.

Pretty much nailed the numbers. (y)

Jeep's only 4200 lbs, one of the reasons I put it on a diet this last year. Been shopping around for an aluminum hauler

What’s the hitch rated for on the gladiator, without weight distribution?

On the F150 I had a gross trailer weight over 5k required weight distribution.

Yep. All kinds of rules to the towing stuff.

If you want to hit that max towing number that they publish, you have to wipe your butt over your shoulder.

It’s really not about the capabilities. It’s all a game of ratings and legalities.

For instance, I have an F350 and the only difference between the same model F250 is the rating sticker and badges that say F250 vs F350. Zero mechanical difference.
