Holy moly Batman! Is this how much re-gearing should cost?

I live east of Seattle about an hour or so... recently got a quote from a local 4x4 shop to install new gears in my front dana 30. I have all the parts as I was planning on figuring this one out myself (former jet engine mechanic), but I have come to a lack of time lately, and they quoted me $1400 plus tax for labor.

Is this the going rate these days?

Wanna drive 4 hours south and I'd help.

Or find us someplace out of the rain and I might come up...been wanting to run Elbe and hit some other spots up there.

I'd take you up on it, but I'll most likely end up just eating the cost. I've been short on time lately and I need a 4x4 soon, especially if we plan on getting anymore weather. We live in one of the areas that gets Mt Rainiers weather and we tend to get a lot of ice when it snows.

That is very high..this is just the front and you are supplying the parts? I know a couple people who would be at $600 or so

In New York and very expensive labor. Quoted 1000 from a very high reputable 4x4 shop for both front and rear.

That is absolutely STUPID high for a little over 4 hours of experienced labor.

I used to do all my own regears. This past summer I paid a shop to install 5:38's. They were very reasonable and set the gears up perfect. no noises or vibes.
The price was quite reasonable. The invoice says 5:13's but I switched to 5:38's when I dropped it off.

That's kind of what I was hoping. I'm gonna email him back just to make sure he understands it is only the front. Can't imagine what that shop rate would have penciled out to.

Might want to price compare a Dana 44 or 60 pre geared and lockered axle.

The real bitch of it is, I have a dana 44 sitting on jack stands waiting for a rebuild/customization when time/money permits, so the dana 30 is literally only getting parts so I don't have to call family to come save my wife when she gets stuck with our baby in bad weather (happened).
