I'd like to make a picket fence area for my small dog, Holly. I'm considering different styles and considered using rough cut lumber for the pickets with pressure treated 4x4 posts and cross members. Can anyone offer insight or advice on this? Thanks.

Is the wood kiln dried? Do you plan to paint it?

There's a house near me that just had a wooden fence installed, but it was installed by a fence company. It looks nice, but its unpainted and I'm not sure how it will age. This fence is about 6' tall. The tall fence overwhelms the small yard.

Another house near me installed a split rail fence and lined it with vinyl covered welded wire fencing for his dogs. The fence encloses his back yard and you barely notice the welded wire.

Have you considered an electric fence? I did a DIY electric fence that I bought at a big box store. It lasted longer than my dog.

We re-did our fence two years ago. Lumber was the same cost as PVC. The choice was simple at that point.

I would use Cedar posts. I’ve found that they last longer than treated posts. I do treat the Cedar posts with a copper solution. Treated cross members are OK they seam to last as long as the pickets. I got my PHD (post hole digger) at age 5. My Dad was a fence contractor for Sears.
