Greetings

I've been struggling to get my Jeep back up and on the road. The biggest challenge has been figuring out what is causing the P0442 code - been chasing this for a couple months now..... I've read many of the threads on this code have followed much of the advice that I've read - without success. I have a 97 TJ with 4.0 that started throwing this code awhile ago. The purge valve solenoid has been replaced as has the charcoal cannister, most of the vacuum hose, and the gas cap (with a Mopar cap). All the lines under the hood and back to the tank have been smoke tested. I even dropped the tank and replaced almost all rubber hoses. When I smoke tested the lines going back to the tank there were no leaks and when the gas cap was removed there was a big rush of air/smoke so I know it was had a pretty good amount of pressure. The CEL comes back on after being reset. The one thing I'm suspicious of is that I can't feel the purge valve solenoid cycle.... and I don't measure any voltage there - but I'm not sure what I should see - is it simply 12V DC and how long does that valve open for or does it cycle? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Haven't been able to get it emissions tested with the CEL and being in the Phoenix area there is no waiver no matter how much you spend to get it fixed ............:( Thank you for your help..........

Maybe this wiring diagram will help. Purge solenoid is on the far left side.

Thank you both so much. That will help me test this further. So frustrating.................... I don't know if the engine got up to normal temperature when I was checking this.........

You have a wiring issue it seems.

did you replace the cannister and purge valve at the same time ? or did you replace the valve and then later the cannister ?

Replaced them within the same week of each other - throwing parts at the problem :(. I just went outside and tested - I can feel the purge valve solenoid cycling (cycles faster than I expected) and there is strong vacuum at the purge valve from the intake manifold connection. Not as much suction drawing in vapors from the canister. Thanks again - would be nice to be able to pass emissions and register this thing again.......

well if the cannister was leaking and you replaced the purge valve 1st as soon as it started it sucked in charcoal and screwed up that new purge valve !

what was the face palm for MAC ? did I miss something ?

Me commenting on sucking charcoal into a new purge valve and destroying it.

Sounds exactly like what I would do.

I've been chasing very very occasional evap codes on my 97. Seems to only happen when I'm really throwing the Jeep around...and I'm pretty sure the "new" gas cap I bought is already coming apart...not to hijack this thread.

I think before I really chased evap codes on my 97 I might just buy a copy of HP tuners and remove it from the PCM. Maybe.
