How can I get power back without re-gearing after installing bigger wheels and tires?

Try one of these. 🤫

After installing 18" wheels with 35inch tires (35x12.5xr18) I lost significant power, torque. At 55mph RPM is way up and auto-transmissiom will not shift into higher gears or overdrive.

I do not want to change the axle gears.
Question: If I went with 33" tires, would I get my power back? Higher transmission gears?

@Ednot4saken - I'll answer the question I bolded above just in case you drop back in since I don't think anyone else has touched on it. In short, unless you had 33s before switching to 35s, going with 33s will not restore your lost power.

A more nuanced answer is we can't know what may or may not be an acceptable tradeoff for you without knowing your current gearing and the terrain you drive. Your profile says you have an '05 with a 6cyl and automatic transmission, which should be the 42RLE. But what are your current gears? You can find out what gears your Jeep was equipped with from the factory by entering your VIN in this website.

For what it's worth, I had that engine/trans combo with 3.73:1 gears and 30x9.50-15 tires, and thought it drove acceptably like that. However, even bumping up to 31s would have been beyond the limit of what I find tolerable, and would have left me wanting for lower gearing. I ended up with 33s and 5.13:1 gears in the axles to accommodate them.

In summary, switching from 35s to 33s will likely result in an incremental improvement, but you will probably still be seriously disappointed with the performance. Your only real alternatives are to go back to the stock tire size or regear, which you have probably gathered from all of the other posts in this thread.

Saying 'I want more power/torque with these giant tires but I don't want to re-gear' is like saying 'I want to win the lottery but I don't want to play.'

I will say my Rubicon with 4.10 gears and 33" tires is really nice on the road and very capable offroad.

I don't feel a need to regear with my 33's and 4.10's. Maybe in the future?
