Why does my Jeep sound like an old VW?

I just swapped in a lower mileage (90k) 4.0. Before this it sat for a very long time (7 years) while I dealt with other crap. I don’t really hear the sound when the jeep is parked and the hood is up, a tiny bit and not at all if I give it gas (fan gets too loud). It sounds really good just idling. But when I start driving it like an old vw bug. I am not sure how else to describe it. More so under load (uphill vs. downhill)

When I swapped engines, the new one still had the exhaust and intake manifolds bolted on so I left those and that does seem to be the area that the sound is coming from. Could it be an exhaust leak or bad gasket?

Hopefully you can hear it in this video, I recorded it on my way to work and didn’t really have a chance to watch it except on my phone and there’s a ton of background noise here.

What muffler and exhaust system do you have installed ?
Sounds normal with an aftermarket catback system.

Still original stock exhaust at the moment. I am planning to replace it soon. I was thinking it might be where the y pipe connects to the manifolds. I had a hell of a time with those bolts.

Since the head studs are not pulling out of the cases (air cooled VW thing) , Im gonna say exhaust leak.

You can get a piece of heater hose, hold one end to your ear, and then put the other end to different places at the exhaust ports or where ever you think the noise is coming from and pinpoint the leak.
