Best places to retire?

So I have about 2 - 3 years until I fully retire. Considering getting out of Northern CA, don't get me wrong I love this place, close to the oceans, Monterey, Pebble Beach, Half Moon Bay. A few hours to Lake Tahoe, the Rubicon and Fordyce Trails. 1 hour to Napa and Sonoma Wine Country. And there is the great weather.

Also San Francisco with its wonderful homeless population, and too much 🌈

BUT

Our Governor ( Your next President ) is a jackass, too many liberals, too many restrictions, anti-gun, anti-American.
High taxes our sales tax right now are 8.75% and nearby cities are at 10.75%, and we have state income taxes.

So where can I move to that has mild winters no snow no Wisconsin, Alaska, mild summers so Arizona is out, Florida is too humid. I know picky picky 😄

Would love to be on the water either a lake or river and near golf, and a place where I can fly 🇺🇲 and feel like a true american

. So where can I go help me out

I keep looking at St. George, UT, and SW Colorado. I'm not too fond of Colorado politics, so I might opt for just across the border in SE UT somewhere. Many years to go for me, so I keep looking.

. . . So where can I move to that has mild winters no snow . . . and a place where I can fly 🇺🇲 and feel like a true american. . . ?

Getting close here also. We're looking at North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama. All for climate and tax structure. Florida is almost certainly out. Also very seriously considering going the expat route...Italy, Spain, as well as Thailand, Singapore, Philippines and other temperate regions- right now, Belize and Roatan (Honduras) are hi on the list. We're actually flying to Roatan to vacation and browse the real estate this fall.
Wouldn't even consider mainland Honduras, but the gov't has a vested interest in keeping violent crime away from the islands. Plus, the water barrier make it inconvenient for all but the most dedicated ne'er do well.

What part??
My wifes BFF has a Mexican mother, and a 100% Ireland off the boat father that retired to Puerto Vallarta about 15 years ago.

They got a beautiful big place in a gated high rise right off the beach. I think it was $300K back then and only because her mom is from Mexico so the purchase was simpler

They love it there and fly back to Chicago for the summer every year. Ive been to Mexico alot and its propagandized more to keep Americans home

Hell I went to Tijuana alone when I was 19 in the military temp training at San Diego. Drank & shopped on the streets zero issues and Im white as a ghost. From Chicago tho, so my senses are more keen perhaps

The Wife and I have been looking at areas to retire for 15 yrs or so and have not found the perfect place. For us Health Care is the most important item. Rural areas are nice but you need to drive too far to get to medical care and shopping among other inconveniences. Another thing to consider is what the hell are you going to do there? Keeping busy after retirement is hard for many people. I would suggest you rent an Airbnb for a month in order to get the lay of the land before any permanent move. Unfortunately we have not found any place with the climate here in Ca. Because of Prop 13 my property taxes are very low also. Sit down and list all you expenses. We made a spreadsheet listing as many variables as we could and when we travel to a locale we are interested we see how things stack up. Medical care, taxes (retirement income, property, sales), food prices and availability, insurance, friendliness of the locals, housing costs, things to keep you occupied, weather (all year) etc. The main things keeping us in Ca are weather and we own a substantial amount of property here and have to figure out how to divest it with the minimal amount of a tax hit. So far for us it looks like it’s going to be a summer lake house in Wi and a winter home in Az. The hardest part for us is leaving all our friends and contacts.

What are these HOA's y'all speak of??

We don't have a nanny state where I live!!!

Homeowners Associations. Some are ok and some can be a real Pain in the Ass. To be honest I live in which can be a little challenging at times, it all depends on your life style. In mine I have to get approval before I can change the paint color of the exterior. Its not really and big deal almost no ever gets turned down as long as the colors are earth tones or mid tones. I am ok with since it keeps the neighbor from painting there house bright blue. It also keeps people from parking cars on there front lawns, having cars jacked up on stands for months, or parking big boats in the driveway for months.

Now my cabin is also in a small HOA that has almost no rules. Just make sure if you are thinking of moving to one you read the CC&R's ( Rules ) very carefully. Years ago I got a letter saying I was no able to park my work truck in my driveway and no commercial vehicles were allowed. After reading the CC&R's I wrote them a letter saying the CC&Rs say nothing over a 3/4 truck was allowed I wrote and told them my F150 was a 1/2 ton so i did not meet those requirements.

They came back it was still considered a commercial vehicle because it had signs on the sides, I came back with a neighbor up the street drives a Red Jeep Cherokee with signs on the sides, his signs said " San Ramon Valley Fire Dept. " I said a commercial vehicle is a commercial vehicle.

They gave up 😂

I have been in Florida for thirty five years, and have made a lot of money. I am thinking about selling both houses and heading to Alabama. Florida is expensive and has got progressivly hotter each summer. Alabama has some good houses with property for under $250,000

There are parts of Alabama that are quite pretty - unlike Florida which is mostly flat and ugly. But I don't want to deal with snow. Not even a little bit of it.

Have considered both of these along with Georgia.

GA..moved here after 30.yrs in Chicago. Takes me 20min to get downtown for the one day a week in the office, 45min to the airport, and under 2hrs to get here.

Sports teams, decent cost of living / property taxes way less than IL and CA, and the political scene is varied enough to meet your needs and a town the supports them.

As far as HOAs go, I don't want any part nor parcel of them - which pretty much means I'm restricted to older houses as I don't think most localities will allow a new development that doesn't have an HOA built in. Some years ago, our local county gov't was cracking down on RV parking and similar things. Apparently, at a rather contentious county board meeting, they were told in no uncertain terms: "You are *NOT* an HOA, BUTT THE FUCK OUT!!".

They butted out, which has made everyone's life in the UN-incorporated areas much nicer. I don't have to worry about bullshit. And yea, there's a guy a couple of streets over who painted his house bright blue - not my style but more power to him I say!

Even though I've been retired now for 15 years I'm looking at moving too due to the political climate in WA... We're now CA north with all the restrictions to our freedoms and I didn't defend this country for 28 years to have them slowly taken away from me. Never thought I'd see WA become like this. I'm also done with snow and would like to be some place with a more moderate climate.
For me moving to another country is OUT... I've been to enough other countries to realize what we have here is better and IMO no where is would work for me. But I've got to find a state that isn't going to infringe on my rights and doesn't have a climate where they might in the next 20-25 years. I only need a small plot of land with a large shop & a RV pad where I could park my motorhome as I can live in it but I want a spot for working on stuff.

Youre old enough to remember the West 20-25 years ago. I also served for 10 years back during Clinton and Bush Jr and saw alot of bad things happen under both admins.

One of my duty stations was a nuke ship out of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for several years. Beautiful state, depressing weather tho. Seattle was a clean and beautiful city…..

Did you ever think it would get this bad? Most didnt, but State by State theyre influxing the population density centers (cities) of every State to control the political climate of an entire State.

Living out of an RV gives you more flexibility and living Rural will also help with pro2nd Sheriffs that answer to the people. Stay away from Municipalities that answer to the State level Govt chain.

We nearly relocated to Arizona just 6 years ago and now this is a Demoturd Governor “elected”? Its all goin to hell

There is an old man in St Croix county Wisconsin right now facing murder charges for defending himself against a mob of 17 year old idiots that mobbed him, and he stabbed one. (Apple River) Its a red county too…..blows my mind as Ive seen the video, it was self defense all day

This isnt the country it use to be that we fought to protect…..and it hurts to say I cant promote my kids into todays military either

I told @AndyG I will be at a convention in Birmingham in Oct. and lets meet up:). . I would have said hook-up but I don't want him to take it the wrong way 🌈

One thing to think about is the lack of public land in the eastern half of the country. There are small patches, but in the east is almost entirely private.

I live in the Nashville area and it is 1200 miles to get to Denver. There really isn't much in between. I have not picked where I will retire, but it will be in the western part of the country.

He stabbed more than one. The one was essentially disemboweled in the river.

The kids were calling him a pedophile and pushing him down and beating on him prior.

It's still an uphill battle for him but the kids are doing a a very bad job of changing their stories in their testimony.
