Size for new tires?

I bought this 2006 Jeep TJ several years ago as mainly just a hunting rig. It started having death wobble and I recently replaced the steering components and trackbar with the Crown Automotive steering upgrade and a JKS trackbar. So far, that seems to have made a big difference. I'm slowly working on other issues like new shocks, brakes, and tires, as all of this needs replacing.

Anyway, the Jeep came with 35s, but I have no idea if the guy made the other upgrades to handle these tires. Would it be better to go back to the 33s? The Jeep has a 4-inch lift.

Go easy on me, I'm learning as I go. :)

Work on getting to know the rig a bit better before making any decisions. If you have not already, figure out what axles and gear ratio you are running, whether you have upgraded brakes, what lift you actually have, if you are running a body lift, etc. All these need to be understood to inform further mod decisions.

Biggest thing: get your post count up enough (or better yet, become a supporting member) to post pictures of the rig, suspension, steering, etc. Then the folks here can really help.

Welcome to the forum. Good job tackling the death wobble. Stick around - this is the best place in the world to learn about your TJ.

Yes. Sorry, I can't help myself sometimes.
Seriously, you'll find much better info from the serious guys, like-"Get to know you're rig before you make big (read-expensive) changes."
I think 4" is enough to stuff 35s under, but will the rear end hold up? What's your gearing? Are you gonna upgrade your brakes to handle those big ol 35s?
For reference, I just rebuilt my Dana 35 into a super D-35 because the pinion seal was going...because the pinion bearings were shot...biggest tire I ever ran prior to the rebuild was 31s.
Now I'm at 33s with a 1.25 body lift.

Thanks! I'll try and determine the gear ratio and axles. I found threads on how to do that. I'm fairly certain it's all stock. I have no idea how to know what lift I have. I just know it's 4 inches. I'll also check for a body lift.

Well, it came with 35s, so I know they'll fit. But after doing some reading, I've seen that 35s aren't a good idea without making a lot of upgrades. That's why I was wondering if going back to 33s made more sense. I'm not looking to make it into a rock crawler, just a safe Jeep to hunt out of and ride around town.

Measure your springs. Stock is 12" in front ant 8" in back, so anything over that, whether spring or spring + spacer, is the amount of lift you have.

I know it's 4 inches...just don't know what brand lift it was. I THINK RC from what I can tell.

If you truly have 4” of lift then the max recommended tire size is 33”. It’s always best to actually measure your springs though, rather than go off of what a specific lift brand advertises, since those are just ballpark figures. If it’s only 3” then 32” is the max recommended tire size, so every inch counts. Congrats on the new Jeep. Should be fun as a go anywhere hunting rig.

Be sure to report them to me...We can’t have anybody on here cutting up or anything.

His posts are dead on the money- You can turn the wheel one exact revolution and count the driveshaft turns to figure out the gear ratio you have-

And basically you’ve got the right mindset- you suspect that smaller tires are somewhat less problematic and that you’ve got to sort out what you have-

The best advice I can give you is be patient and be thorough and pay close attention- as you proceed and use this forum.

The best TJ centric knowledge you will find is here.
