Another TJ6 build

It drives!!! Straighter then it did before😀

Thanks guys, Ive owned the Jeep for almost 2 years now and there was always an intermittent sound I couldn’t find. Since this project I went for a drive down a long hill at 65 mph and the noise came back like it always has but got louder and louder. Oil levels good in the rear end , took off my drive shaft and there’s about 1/4” of front to back play on my yolk/pinion.Long story short I have a bad rear pinion bearing I’m assuming, haven’t even offroaded yet lol I’m tapped out on funds so at least I can look at it in the driveway 😀 I did get to go to a close dirt road and take one a couple pics. Some body told me to tighten my pinion nut to see if that helps but idk. I don’t want to mess up my gears.

If its a tj Dana 44 you can just tighten the pinion nut to spec,no crush sleeve. But you really should pop out the carrier and pinion.then inspect all the bearings. Good news is changing bearings isn't very expensive.but you do need an inch pound dial type torque wrench to set pinion preload

Yeah it’s a Dana 44, yeah I’ve been reading up and doing some research. I might attempt it myself, but I need to call around and get some prices. As a helper years ago I’ve seen a couple bigger geared elevators been setup with the paint/wipe but at the same time if it’s not to expensive just have some one do it.

I took the 1/2” impact to the pinion nut and it worked. No noise or play anymore so I went out and put about 200 miles on it. The longer wheel base feels great. Everything with the stretch worked great, no issues. I do have an small exhaust/manifold leak now but that’s easier then rebuilding the rear end.
