Is there a correct way to disconnect the wiring on the third brake light from the stock tire carrier?

I have a 2003 Wrangler X that I put TJ Rubicon Wheels with tire size 245 x75 x 16 - Spare currently fits fine.

I have a 3 inch suspension lift with Rancho shocks all the way around and Fox Performance 2.0 Front Stabilizer

I would like to go up in size a little to - 255 x 85 x 16 - But I believe I need to remove the 3rd brake light to get it to fit.

I would like to disassemble it in case I needed to put it back on, so I didn't just want to cut the wiring.

Just looking for the best way to do it.

Thanks

The inside passanger side of the tailgate should have a block that has 2 wired connections that touch the tub in the inside when closed and then the ground is through the hinges. With the tailgate open the circuit is open and you should be able to take the cover off of the pin housing on the inside tailgate. If I remember correctly you should be able to pull the wires off there and pull them out through the rubber grommet through the tailgate.

Lots of things you can do other than the stock third brake light...get it disconnected for now but strongly advise you to find a solution. Both legally and because people are idiots and don't pay attention so give them every opportunity to see you and stop. Here's mine...made a custom bracket.

Yes the reason to take it off is another topic. I also would keep it till ya can’t and then get a different 3rd brake light when the stock one doesn’t work. When I jumped to bigger tires I added longer bolts to the mount and raised the base of the light up so it was past the tire and the light was visible. Takes a trip to a hardware store and a few bucks. I now have moved my license place to the spare tire and use an oro license place light and is has an integrated 3rd brake light too. I was dumb and removed the stock tailgate wiring mount on the tub and just ran wires from the inside of the tailgate to the tub because I didn’t know it was grounded through the hinges so I thought I had to add a ground wire since I had more than 2 wires for the license plate light and 3rd brake light.

Just add some washers to raise the light and it will fit.
