Shouldn't have just thrown parts at. Have a surging idle at start up.

Hello all,

New to the group and Jeeps overall.

I recently acquired a 2002 TJ 2.5 auto with 79k on it. It was my sisters and has been sitting in a covered barn for the last 3 years only being started and ran a few times a year.

When I first got it to my place it started and ran but has an exhaust manifold leak and a siezed alternator.

So I jumped right into working on it and took the approach that I normally do when working on older Toyotas that I enjoy tinkering with in that if the parts are cheap enough and since im there I’m going to go ahead and replace them.

Ive since found out that this train of thought doesn’t work well with Jeeps and they may not always like non OEM parts.

So here’s what I’ve got.

When the jeep sits overnight and I go to start it, it initially idles rough and the idle surges but as soon as I give it some gas it straightens out. It also smells really rich when this is going on. It drives great other than start up and no check engine light. Here’s what I’ve initially replaced as soon as I got the jeep. Didn’t really have the jeep running long enough to know if it was doing this idle thing prior to me changing parts.

I changed the exh/int gasket

Throttle body and valve cover gasket

All fuel injectors(standard brand)

Plugs(champion 7034)

Parts store wires cap and rotor

A standard brand blue streak coil

NTK/NGK O2 sensors(both of them)

Replaced cracked and rotted vacuum lines and elbows.

Standard brand coolant temp sensor and a OEM temp thermo

Water pump and fan clutch

Changed coolant and oil.

Still have the 3yr old quarter tank of gas in it.

After I realized I’ve got an issue and realizing I should have done some research instead of just throwing parts at it, I replaced the following and completed these tests.

Standard brand TPS sensor and IAC valve.

It’s Still acting up so I completed some fuel pressure testing today.

After priming the pump 3-4 times I have 42-43psi

Running I have around 49 psi

After letting it run for a couple minutes shut it off and it bleeds down to 30psi after sitting for an hr.

If this damn thing wasn’t free(not anymore though) I would be super pissed right now.

But it is kinda fun and easy to work on compared to most cars that I’m stuck working on.

Sorry for the novel.

Myself,my bank account and the Amazon delivery driver would appreciate any help or suggestions you may have on what part I shouldn’t have replaced or what may be going on.

Thanks again

John

you say your still running 3 year old gas ! put new gas in it and maybe add a good dose of seafoam to it and drive it, I'd bet it will clear up.

Thanks tr21. I was planning on that first thing. Was just holding off in case someone condemned the fuel pump.
I was hating the idea of dropping the tank with a full tank of gas in it.
Thanks again

OH and welcome to the forum. just a FYI there is a complete maintenance manual and parts catalog downloadable for free in the resources section here.

I would have emptied that old gas out before I even started it. I recently dropped my tank to replace my fuel pump. Took an hour by myself with a floor jack. I had about 6 gallons in the tank.

I agree but he did say it was running ok after it cleared out so I just suggest a double dose of seafoam and fresh gas. I'd fill it up and go for a weekend drive to get her good and hot and run a tank of gas through it. if after 3 or 4 tanks it doesn't straighten out then start trouble shooting it....

Just picked up a can of Sea foam and will be heading out this evening to fill her up with 93 octane.
Just for giggles since I’m only a few fasteners away from having the fuel rail off, should I pull it to see if I have a leaking injector or do my pressure readings look ok?

Thanks again for all the help.

Not necessary. I saw some kids start up a YJ with 20 year old gas in Jurassic World.
Oh, and the guy with the lever action rifle who shot it constantly never cocked it once during the whole film 🙄

Id fill up at a name brand station selling top tier gasoline. I always thought Gas was Gas but after filling up with mobil several tanks the little idle issue I was having resolved itself. Coincidence ??? i can't say. Where I live the Mobil gas is the same price as the convenient stores gas so i continue to use Mobil. As far as the Seafoam I can't say, I'd hit it with a heavy dose of Chevron Techron before Seafoam.

I've had positive results with Seafoam, fuel treatment and intake spray.
I use it when going on a long trip, so the engine stays hot through the whole tank of gas.
YRMV ;)
