Dana 30 Axle limitations

As suspected at that price point, that's not a "built" Dana 44... it doesn't include the chromoly axle shafts we were discussing, that just includes the most basic stock-strength carbon steel axle shafts.

That axle from ECGS actually comes with 4140 import shafts...the "stock steel" listed is talking about the stock steel diff cover.

I wouldn't buy that one...the only thing I would buy from them is an empty housing or one with maybe gears, a locker, and brakes. I wouldn't want any of the shaft options they have. They really should look into giving an option to equip their axles with Revolution US shafts. I would buy their axles much more readily if they did.

Side question:
Dana 30 front w/35 rear
31" all terrain tires
No rocking.
Non aggressive off roading.
Am I fine with stock setup?

That's a perfect setup. You'd be fine with that even if you were doing some mildly aggressive trails for a stock Jeep. 31's are a pretty light tire compared to a 33 or 35 inch tire.

I ran that same setup (3.73 gears, 4.0) for 12 years, before putting in a rear Dana 44, which I did because that's what I always wanted, not because there was any crying need. I don't do rocks, either.

Works for me, and I can get pretty aggressive at times. Just shut'r down if you start to get any wheel hop. That's with four angry squirrels though, so take it for what it's worth.

And the locker in that configuration is just an Aussie which is not a full case locker, it's just a very inexpensive lunchbox locker that is too weak for the rear axle with larger tires and VERY VERY poorly behaved on the street when installed in a rear axle. Lunchbox lockers like the Aussie in the rear are very poorly behaved on the street and they're too weak for rear axle use in tough conditions. Lunchbox lockers are never a good choice for a rear axle.

Apples and oranges.

I ran a No Slip in the 8.25 in my XJ and it was great on road with an auto trans. Ran Rubicon, Fordyce, and other stuff without issue. Of course the 8.25 is bigger and stronger than the 35. I also ran 29 spline chromo axles.

The $100 more expensive Powertrax No-Slip (which I ran in my front axle) is the only lunchbox locker that is better behaved (but still not great) when in the rear axle on the street. The Aussie, Lockrite, and especially the EZ-Locker are all very poorly behaved on the street in the rear axle. Any lunchbox's biggest problem however is it's not big & strong enough to hold up to serious wheeling with 35's. I would not build any off-road purpose built rear axle with any lunchbox locker. I especially wouldn't want its behavior on the street.

Can you provide a link that shows a ready to bolt in Dana 44 from ECGS with gears, chromoly axle shafts, and a full-case locker for $2000 to $2500?

I was thinking the same thing that shit costs 6 grand now. Granted this was during Trump so maybe it’s possible you could get a dana44 for the price of a happy meal. In all honesty they were 5 grand when this was made. 2k would’ve gotten you an empty shell with no gears or anything
