I've noticed a high RPM hard shift for a while and when it's cold if I put it in reverse the engine dies. The mechanic who brought this to my attention is going to look at it next week. He says the torque converter is not disengaging. From what I gather jeep only made this engine 1 year. 2002 Anyone had this issue have any ideas what it is?

This comes up from time to time. Next time you start the jeep, put it into N and let it idle for a minute. Then shift into gear and see if it does the same thing, then report back.

Also, obligatory "check the ATF level with the engine running and the transmission in neutral."

Have already tried the neutral thing. It does seem to help if I go to neutral first then back in gear but it still.does it just not as bad. But it makes it rough to have to put it into neutral at every stop sign. Also alot of.time from.park to reverse it will kill the engine even. Fluids are good

ok, i thought it was only happening when cold. That sort of thing is usually caused by a faulty check valve allowing the torque converter to drain back. Once you charge the TC by idling in neutral for a short time that problem goes away. Sounds like you have something different going on. Could be a torque converter issue for sure, or could be something in the valve body. One easy troubleshooting step would be do disconnect the torque converter lockup solenoid at the back of the transmission case. Just in case the lockup is misfiring. Unplugging it would force it stay unlocked. It'll throw a P0743, but if it solves your stalling problem we can address that next.

Which engine do you have? The 32RH was used in the TJ from 97-02, but this transmission has been in use for many many years in Mopars.

I just found a small spring unhooked under there. I'm going to hook it up and see if that helps. Gotta wait foe it to cool off first

There is a small return spring for the throttle valve. That will affect your shift points, but shouldn't cause it to die I wouldn't think. Or at least I can't come up with a reason why anyway.
