Back in the game (had a 90 YJ back in the day and have missed it for 18 years now), headed to DMV tomorrow to register my new to me 05 rocky mountain edition...

Anyhow, I have some cancer on the rocker panels. I want to put on rocker guards/sliders to cover it, BUT I have the extended fender flare, and they are painted silver along with the rest of the jeep.

So what to do? Remove the flares and make the addition? Is it possible to get the fender flares back on over any addition?

Is there something out there that I've missed that accounts for the extended flares?

I really wish I had black and not silver flares, I think life would be easier here.

Anyone have pics of silver flares with black sliders/slider panel covers?

Welcome to any and all ideas here guys! Thanks in advance!

Had to post from the pho e to put up a pic

Why not get a set of replacement fender flares in black?

I wouldn't cover that rust, that will only make it worse as water will get trapped in there (trust me) and rot it out faster.

The right thing to do is sand it down to bare metal and get rid of every bit of rust with a wire wheel / sanding. After that, you could repaint it, or at that point you could get some rocker guards such as these:

But you need to take care of that rust first if you plan on owning your TJ for a while, that's for sure.

Thats an idea. How hard is it to pull off and replace? Never messed with it before and didn't think to look.

Yeah, no doubt. I was going remove all rust, prime and paint, then whatever covers it will be sealed to keep water off/out.

You don't just want to remove the extended portion? That's what I would do. You're going to want too clean up that rust too... This is what happens when it's just covered and allowed to spread...

You have options; have the rust cut out, repaired, then re-paint to match; repair the rust, spray with some Rustoleum, remove the flare extension, and add some sliders to cover the area. Whatever you do, do not simply cover the rusted areas. They will worsen over time and make a small problem become a big one.

I went to 2 body shops, guys I know, and was shocked at the quotes i got for cutting/welding/painting. Thats out.

Im wondering how black rocker guards are foing to look with tbe silver fender flairs. I dont think Ill like it, thus I asked if anyone per chance had pics.

For a bill Im liking the idea of the black fender flairs. Stuck my head under the fender today and it looks stupid easy to boot.

As I said earlier, no way Im just covering the rust. It will be addressed. Family business is metal finishing, so rust, even if I cant see it, Ill know its there and is no bueno, not in my DNA
