I own a 2005 RME with a 4.0 & a 6-sod. My ECU is going out and I can’t afford a new one from Wrangler fix @ $1700. I have an opportunity to purchase a factory unit from a wrecked 2006 X with a 4.0L and an Auto. I’m curious if I can use the ECU without much issue even though the transmissions are different. Mine has 3 plugs in the harness, this harness uses 4. Otherwise the wiring is identical it seems. Also, is there any other I should be on the look out for? I know this will throw engine codes for vin matching issues, but that’s I small issue considering all the codes mine throws now.

@jbradshaw your expertise would be amazingly helpful.

Using the 2006 X's ECU in your 2005 RME could work, but there are risks. The different transmission might cause issues with engine management, and the extra plug could mean additional functions your current setup doesn't support. You may face compatibility problems with sensors or features tied to the auto trans. The VIN mismatch will indeed trigger codes, but if you're okay with that, it could be worth a shot. Just make sure the wiring matches up and double-check for any specific functions your vehicle may need.

No, the auto PCM will not work.
