Theoretically from what I've seen in the leaks, this could be a 6k scan. I mean that I've seen reference to *up to* 6k scanning. I highly doubt they're enlightened enough to take it at that full scan level, clean it up, and release a raw "uncompressed full res" version digitially only or on thumb drives at 6 to 8k for buku bucks a pop. That would make too much sense, diseny is too retarded to do that.
The original negatives were 35mm film, and if they did a good job with that, they could get useful information even at those (and maybe slightly higher) levels. Yes, film in competent hands can contain that much detail.
Some or a great many of the optical effects were done on 70mm film and spliced into the 35mm film. This means those effects would or could have more detail and finer grain structure than the 35mm film.
There reportedly were some *blow ups* to 70mm film of the movies made and shown, but you wouldn't get more detail thant he original had. Also there were reportedly multitrack (more then stereo ... I think I've seen it said they were six track) cuts of the audio that was played with these 70mm showings - these are IIRC effectively lost, and can only be recreated. If they are smart they will find and restore those and give that option.
IF they do a REALLY good job *from the original negatives* that could theoretically be multiple "generational copies" better than what was seen in theaters. What I mean is that there was the original negative, a copy made of that, and IIRC they took copies of that copy to make the projected film reels everyone saw in the theaters. I am no expert or even amateur here, I'm just repeating what I remember seeing.
What would suck very badly is if they did the hideous nonsense that cameron has done to his movies where they try and use AI and postprocessing to remove all film grain. Doing so inherently and always removes useful visual information detail... all because some mentally midgeted "autist" who can't get out of their mommie's basement doesn't like film grain.
