The one you linked: The CPU was new in 2017. So precisely what I was saying. You have to know how to lookup the specs to figure out how old they are. The Precision line is good though.
Often the refurbs are lease returns. I did leases at two previous jobs. Most leases are 3 years.
At my previous job (small business with external clients) we did have a few clients that didn't like our prices. So they would buy their own PC's. I went out on a project to replace multiple PC's and the 'new' PC's were slower than the PC's we were replacing. That was fun to explain. They let a finance guy buy the PC's. He bought the cheapest he could find. They were Dell desktops that were lighter than most laptops. Pentium CPU IIRC (slower than Celeron).

I do not have this option, but think a lot of folks should consider it for what they actually do on a computer. Also, word to the wise, don't toss your old PC's or software/OS installation discs, you might find them useful in the technological future we seem to be hurtling towards.
A few situations I do suggest Linux:
Windows 11 won't install on some older PC's that shipped with Windows 10. You can install it anyway using some tricks, but those are also good candidates for Linux.
The Microsoft cut off is usually around 10 years. Whereas with Linux, you could take a 20 year old PC and install a current version of Linux that will still get app and security updates. So it's much more secure than running an unsupported OS like Windows 10. Hand me your laptop that you abandoned in a closet 10 years ago because it has a virus, I'd put Linux on it.
The main thing people don't understand is you're not going to be able to install the same apps you use on Windows. Adobe Acrobat and MS office are good examples. You can find many free apps that let you view PDF and MS Office files though. You just have to explain that to someone that has been using MS Office at work for many years.
I like to explain it like using a phone. Android is a proprietary version of Linux. An Android phone doesn't have Windows. So you use apps that do similar things. It will be much faster than forcing Windows 11 on a PC that shouldn't be running it.
Correct, which is why I don't have any computers that run any flavor of Linux. GIMP isn't bad, but it's not Photoshop, no decent 2D/3D design programs I'm aware of, same goes for rendering and animation.
Win 11 is an abomination, they should pay users to use it considering what they take.
Fortunately, I don't care when they stop supporting as I've never been much for their "fixes" anyway. The part that gets me is that they now push the obsolescence through other software, virus scanning for example...

Agreed! A month or so ago, I wiped my gaming PC (win11) and put Win10 on it. This fixed a few older games that don't run correctly on Win11. I just don't put sensitive data on it.
Does that there slower CPU make it slower surfin the internet or readin on this here forum ? It doesn't seem to make my stock ticker or buyin stocks any slower and I can still make a Amazon purchase faster than you can say goin to Walmart ! I ain't going to spend $3-4k for a computer and the best graphics card when a $700 dollar one does everything I need. But then I also don't run out and buy a new cell phone every time they release a new model either.
The CPU won't make a noticeable difference when browsing the web. There you're dealing more with your Internet speed. It makes more of a difference if you're working on a CAD file or playing modern video games. Anything processor intensive.
The cores could come into play if you're someone that likes to have 20+ browser tabs open. Close all your tabs and that won't be an issue lol. I've seen people with 100+ tabs open. Tell them to restart the PC, but then when Chrome comes up it prompts to open your previous tabs. Ugh!
Yes, if the current PC can do everything without being noticeably slow, then you're fine. You don't need the latest/greatest to browse the web an use email.

I realize this isn’t the “Grammar Police” thread, but dang how do you make a possessive out of a plural? It’s an extra key stroke to do that, so it takes additional effort to do it incorrectly as opposed to doing it correctly. Most times doing it wrong is because it’s easier than doing it right.

This is the weirdest thing, your response was the first notification I received that someone had responded, so I had not gone back to the thread thinking there was nothing to read. Then oddly enough my internet went out sometime late Friday night and wasn't restored until sometime overnight (Saturday), that has never happened before. Verizon is my provider, it's been rock solid forever until this, and I'm still not sure what even happened.
Anyway I really appreciate all the responses, and I have to take some time to read this whole thread now. Which I'll do later today. Also wondering why I didn't get any notifications, I'll also have to check my settings, not sure how they would've changed however...

Ok having read through this I'll say this, it sounds like most people have greater needs than I do. My uses for my home computer haven't changed much if any in 20 years +/-, those being:
- surfing the net (primarily fucking around on this and a few other forums);
- storing photos (to post on this and a few other forums);
- ordering shit from Amazon and/or Walmart;
- sending/receiving emails;
- drafting letters & similarly simple documents on Word.
That's it, no gaming, no CAD, & no other uses that would require upgrades, & besides Office I have no other software programs installed/needed.
And yes it has to be a desktop, I can't stand laptops, & although I have one at home it's a work related one that I strictly use to connect to my office & do office shit. For all other purposes I much prefer a real keyboard & mouse and a ginormous screen I don't have to squint to see...

If you don’t need Word specifically and could use one of the available Linux alternatives like LibreOffice, I’ll echo the above suggestions of installing Linux on your existing machine. You can even create a bootable live USB so you can try it before installing.
Linux Mint is a good option.
Based on your list, this is what I would say as well. You certainly seem like a good candidate for some flavor of Linux. If I had your usage, that's probably where I'd be.

So the laptop only is used at home? You could maybe set up a dock to use your desktop monitor, keyboard and mouse instead of using the laptop's
Word is the only word processor I've ever used since Word Perfect disappeared light years ago; it's what I use at the office so it forms the basis for 95% of word processing I do, so having it also on the home computer always made sense for the other 5% because I often email myself stuff from the office & tweak it at home rather than doing it on my laptop.
And, I don't even know what Linux is
but whatever it is & however good it is, it sounds like it may be solving problems I don't have...yea there are a bunch of threads I've been in for a while that no longer send me notifications, but I've never had this type of situation where I've started a thread that didn't generate them... it wasn't until the 32nd response where my name was mentioned that I got the someone "Quoted Your Post" notification - when I opened it up I expected it to be the first reply.
The laptop is only used at home and only for work-related things. My home desktop is the issue, and it's the computer I'm on most often when at home. At the office I only use a dual monitor desktop as I usually have several programs running at the same time I need to be able to see simultaneously. When I work from home I can get away with the work-laptop because I really only do a limited amount of single tasks when here.
The most important factor is separation between work/home stuff; multiple people have access to my work system so it remains business only, personal stuff is air-gapped at least from office staff & the IT people.
