Hello! Mainly throwing this out there just to see if anyone else has dealt with this, and what the possible answers may be!! Jeep was driving fine for about 10 minutes, all the sudden stalled out with no warning. No crank, no start after that. Gauges wouldn't move, no CEL, no fuel pump prime, radio came on and a few dash lights. Hooked up the scanner, it powered on but no communication with PCM. Replaced the SKIM fuse behind the glove box. Jeep came to life, drove another 10 minutes, stalled again. This time the fuse wasn't blown but still no crank - no start. Let it sit for a few days. Randomly started and drove for a bit. Once again, stalled out and now we're back to no crank - no start. Checked the fuses, checked the grounds, everything seems fine. Any suggestions or anyone who has dealt with the same issue? Leaning towards the infamous TJ PCM failure, but wanted to throw it out there just in case!! TIA.

As you mentioned, the PCM failure is a common problem with TJs. The fact that you were unable to communicate with the PCM at times could suggest an issue with the module itself or its connections. I'd hit up @Wranglerfix (wranglerfix.com) who is the go to expert on all things PCM around here. He can test it for you for a reasonable price and tell you whether it is indeed the issue or not.

In addition, sometimes the ignition switch can cause these symptoms if it's failing. If it's intermittently failing, it could explain the random stalls and no crank situation. I'd probably start here first.

I'd also be sure to check all the wiring and connectors related to the PCM. Sometimes, a loose or corroded connection can cause communication issues or intermittent electrical faults. This is also more common than you'd imagine.

Even if everything looks fine, a poor ground connection or weak battery can lead to starting issues. Make sure all ground points, especially on the engine block and near the battery, are clean and secure. That's an easy one to rule out but still worth checking.

A relay could also be the culprit. The starter relay or even the fuel pump relay could be causing intermittent issues, so swapping those could be worth a shot.

Thank you for the response! The first 3 days after it stalled, it would randomly start again. But it's been about a full week now of no crank - no start. So whatever it was, has fully quit working now. So thinking the ignition switch finally gave out or the maybe the PCM fully over heated. Again, thanks for replying!

Mine did that after an engine swap and it ended up being the grounds being bad. I replaced them with heavier wires and new ends and now it starts every time. This may not be your problem, but after 20 years the corrosion inside the insulation may be hiding more problems than you know.

Good thinking, they are in PA…
