They will never build it. Elon is smart, he's just talking it up to make Tesla stock look good.
perhaps buying won't even be an option, remember you'll own nothing... the future may consist of nothing more than fleets of autonomous 'cabs' that can only be accessed by your phoooooone, poor @Zorba will be stranded at home or forced to resort to push power, if our overlords allow them that is
BYD sold 2.26 million EVs to Teslas 1.64 million. They have 11 EV models and 7 hybrid models. Significantly cheaper too.
They offer a range calculator that takes ambient temperature and auxiliary users into account. More realistic use cases. Like it being 0-50 F here from November to March, 90-100 from June-August. So heater or AC use most of the year.

If I buy a BYD with the largest battery and longest range, and drive in 0F temps common around Christmas time, with the heater going, the range is ~173 miles. I doubt I make it on my trip. I know my daughter wouldn't on the 455 mile one way trip she did yesterday.
It would be interesting to see some options in the $15-25,000 range. Tesla might be able to hit that mark stripping out some tech and simplifying the base model.

I'd never heard of these guys before, so I went for a look. As friggin' ALWAYS, screens and other gratuitous technology everywhere.
The screens are required by the government for backup cameras, so they will never go away. Maybe some of the cheap models will be nothing more than a backup camera and bluetooth radio like my car's screen is now.
When they first started the backup camera bullshit, many models had the backup display in the rear view mirror. I'm so very SICK of the womb-to-tomb Nanny State crap.
When I drive the Jeep, it's turn your head.
I have mirrors on my mirrors to show along side.

I want an EV with no mechanical power train and a small turbo diesel engine with no DEF to drive and charge it. Probably get 1000 mile range. Then screw the middle east clerics

Yeah, I agree that simple would sell. To us anyway.
Self driving. We have lots of Waymos here because it’s always sunny. Except we had a big rain storm on Wednesday. Local news showed video of an autonomous Waymo vehicle unable to navigate in the flooded street. It stopped, reversed, moved slightly forward, reversed again, moved slightly forward, repeat, repeat, repeat. Other drivers were going around it as HUMANS were able to navigate with water on the road. Imagine these vehicles in areas where the roadways are routinely covered in some form of precipitation or are under construction.
As for the EV with an ICE generator, a co-worker had one of those called a Chevy Volt. They were discontinued in 2019 and were replaced by the all electric Chevy Bolt. Anyone guess why that happened?
As said, future folks won’t own a vehicle. First it will be lease only so you periodically rotate to the newest vehicle (for environmental reasons, of course), then it will transition to publicly accessible autonomous taxis.
Just filled up my volt today. It's chugging along at 210k miles. Previous fill was 3 months and 2481 miles ago. 7.8 gallons. $5.65/g. $44.27 total.
Last 3 winters I've thought the battery could fail at any moment. Maybe this year will be it.
I think it'd make a good start to a complete off-grid setup for a cabin or small house. Just add solar panels and inverter, it already has the battery and generator.
How much don't I want any of that in a vehicle...but I won't lie, the "connects you to Robotaxi Support" and "touchscreen controls" gave me a massive boner...
