I bought my 2.5l 97 tj with 170k miles on it. I have a 3" rancho lift with steering stabilizer. I have 31" all terrains on it now and It seems to handle them just fine in the torture I've put it thru so far. But I need new tires... Would it handle 33" tires without much more strain?

No on that 33" tire question, that's a significant bump up in size while it may not seem so. You neither have the tire clearance they would require on trails like you're in in that photo, nor the extra power needed to turn them. You'd really want at least a 3" suspension lift plus regearing the axles to 4.88 assuming your 2.5 has the 5-speed transmission behind it. 4.56 if it has the automatic. :)

I would highly recommend if you go with 33s to regear. I have a 2.5L 5 speed with 33s and it's dog slow. does pretty good on the trails at low speeds but anything over 50 mph it's a dog

X2 to the above advice. Also, depending on the type of trails you do, with 33" tires and a Dana 35 in the rear, you're going to need to start thinking about a new axle. Again, that depends on how hard you push it and the type of trails you do.

Yeah mine will run about 70 max on the highway till I hit a incline I have to go back to 4rth. But it's not my daily. I have a company truck. The jeep is my weekend vehicle. I don't wanna break an axel on the trails though.

I live in north ga and I run into a lot of deep washes and rock to just sloppy mud.

Mine doesn't even know what 5th gear looks like. I would suggest regearing and upgrading to aloy axles if you go with 33s

The 2.4 / 2.5 is simply not a highway vehicle, for sure. Re-gearing will help it though, no argument there!

True. I have the 2.4, while it does fine with the stock 3.73's and 31's, it is certainly it isn't something I would want to drive/commute with.
If 33's, 2.5/2.4 or 4.0, it needs to 4.56 min or deeper.

A 33" tire is heavy and takes some torque to get it rolling. Gearing is what is needed to overcome the small engines we have available.
