Got a new code last week on the 97 2.5L with 171k.
P0422 indicates the threshold for the catalytic convertor has been reached.
Here's the fix. Part#420002, a Spark Plug Non-fouler found at AutoZone, less than $6.00.
This part basically "smoothes out" for lack of a better phrase, the heat temp highs and lows so the PCM doesn't see the extreme readings... sort of buffers (or cushions) the heat temp spikes.
This part will need 1 alteration. Take a 1/2" drill bit and drill out the existing hole in the adapter so the 02 sensor will have room to fit....
Remove the 02 sensor.
Screw the adapter Spark Plug non-fouler into the exhaust pipe, then screw the 02 sensor into the adapter with the hole drilled out.
Reconnect the 02 sensor and make sure all wires are zip tied away from the hot intake and exhaust manifolds.
No return code after 1 week.
No change in engine performance, still runs like a new engine!
$6.00 fix beats replacing the main cat any day
Easy and cheap!! My kinda fix
