Hunting season is here, my wife and I belong to a Pheasant club and plan on driving the TJ to the club on the days we don't bring a camper. It's only about a 40 minute drive, so all we'll take is a very small ice chest, a couple shotguns, and our dog. Also will need some room for muddy rubber boots at the end of the day. Stupid Krazyfornia wants the guns in a case, soft is ok, so any gun rack need to be able to hold the guns cased. I'd sure like to see some pics of what you guys have done to max out some storage in the back of your rigs to graft some ideas off of. I'm pretty good at fab'n and welding, also working with wood and fiberglass. This is our first Jeep so we are just starting to figure this out, lets see your set ups

I've hung a scabbard along the drivers side in the rear suspended from a couple of u-bolts in the edge of the tub using nylon straps. The butt of the stock is exposed about 3''s so it probably wouldn't fly in the Republic of Kalifornication. I've got a buddy that hung a case from the roll bars so they were out of the way above the cargo area.

These look nice.

I'd leave my wife at home and throw the guns on the passenger seat.
Hell no, she loves to hunt and fish. She's not afraid of going 50 miles offshore with me running for tuna, definitely a keeper. I went out this morning with a couple shotguns and did some measuring, holding them in place, think I came up with a pretty good idea to keep them out of site and meet this Commi state's requirement. Going to use Aluminum, I'll throw some pics when I get it done,,,gregg

Here's my summer setup for hauling the dogs. A SmittyBilt product IIRC. Dogs love it, they can get their heads out into the wind, but are fully contained and safe.

id build a shelf and remove the rear seat. Dog goes on top, guns and supplies underneath. Something like this. KISS

Man, it's gotta be in a case? How will you ever get it out of there in time when the pheasant are attacking?

Just kidding, but seriously why wouldn't you want your gun in a case anyway? You care about it and don't want it to get messed up.

FWIW Kansas requires a case as well. Reading your (CA) laws, I don't see a case as required. A soft case is the way to go in this case. KS spells out case required.

SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES

Nonconcealable firearms (shotguns and rifles) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 25400 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported.

Since these hairy mutts are our kids, I pulled the back seat and built them a platform to ride on. Used plywood and some 1x4's, covered it with 2" foam and an old naugahyde tonneau cover. Storage for clam guns and what not. Lock the backdoor for security. I've carried long guns there in a soft case before without worry.

A good friend of mine has 2. I go to visit and both think they are lap dogs. Crawl up (and its a slow crawl so you don't know its happening) into your lap and give hugs and will not get down unless forced. So funny. . Wonderful dogs. Nice seeing a pup and senior together, both are beautiful. I have to admit, I'm a little jealous. I would like to have one but don't have the room.

I've built a platform that is a little lower but thinking of using it the same way. Can the dogs get in by themselves? Probably pretty high for them.
The older one just puts her feet up on the step and I help her up, the berner just hops on up. The actual platform is 1/2" nylon, same as a cutting board. Mounted on a 2x2" reciever, added non-skid peel and stick. I always help both down though, alot of force on their shoulder's.
