Cleaning head for valve cover gasket

Howdy,
Finally getting around to replacing my valve cover gasket. There is a slight indentation on the head and there is one grease or grime embedded in the groove (see pics).Does all of the have to be cleaned and if so can I use carb cleaner to loosen it up?

Personally I'd use a stiff nylon bristle brush and either brake cleaner or carb/throttle body cleaner to get that gasket seating surface totally bright and shiny clean.
