What have you broken on the trail?

Read the list I posted above, I don’t see enough consistency to call any of them high probability.
My apologies you confused me with the statement that you don’t see any need to carry anything beyond spare fuses. It seems we agree for the most part unless you disagree?

No need to apologize as I’m not disagreeing with you.
I think the most important thing to bring on a run is a positive attitude and a willingness to do whatever it takes to get everybody out. Like your example with the Toyota👍

This is the only time I've ever broken something. Clutch packed full of mud and cooked the clutch leaving me stranded. Had to get someone off a facebook group to flat tow me out. It was a very expensive lesson that could've been easily avoided. To the TJ's credit, I did make it through one way but got stuck after turning around down the track and coming back.

Front axle shaft on a Dana 30. It was almost dark. Left it On the trail till the next day. Able to remove the shaft and get it home without issue.

Saw a gas line pull free near the fuel tank on a friends rig. We zip tied it several times. Every time it broke free the Jeep would die. Finally the guy drove slow enough that it stayed and he made it to a place where he could get a hose clamp.

After all the bumps and bruises I’ve concluded these rigs are really tough.

Did it let you know before it happened or did it just blow up?

It just blew up. I think I was too much on the skinny pedal as I went up a short, steep, loose dirt incline. It was strange to me this happened, but I do have a locker up front.

Was this recently?

Not much compared to some TJ owners... driver's side front axle shaft and steering box, both on the same trail (Sledgehammer) but on two different trips. Then all at once on a trail called Pumpkin Eater, a control arm bolt, wheel, axle-side track bar mount, differential-side yoke, driveshaft u-joint, and a rear driveshaft. Years two control arm mounts came off when I was still running those crappy 1st generation Teraflex control arms. At least that's all the actual breakages. Oh yeah my auto tranny seized up while at the motel early one morning leaving to go to a morning run. Punched sidewalls a few times before I switched to the GY MT/R. :)

Had the center of a wheel break while doing one of the harder trails in Washington st. Talking steep and sidehills.
Thought at first that my passenger side tire had dropped into a big hole until I saw the tires bouncing down the trail.

Blew the hub from a Warn small hub kit and took out a u-joint at the same time. Lucky was almost done with the trail so was able to drive out in 2WD. But then had to drive home in the snow......
Sounded like a shotgun going off and blew the hub housing 30' away.

Don't have any pictures but had a power steering line burst when it rubbed on the inner fender. I have a hydrovac system so it meant I lost brakes also. Had to be towed off the trail.

Broke my tie rod and used my high lift jack handle to weld it together so I could drive it home. Drove it around like that for a month before I finally replaced the tie rod.

How nervous did it make you having to make the decision to leave it on the trail overnight?

I had a limb get up in the skid plate and pinch a locker line... There was so much mud you could not tell what was going on.. could not disengage the front lockers to get home.

Fixed it in a Dollar General parking lot.

What does your fan do in mud that deep, does the clutch kick in or does it just fling mud everywhere?
Can't really say for sure, when I popped the hood after that there wasn't mud flung everywhere like you'd expect so I'd have to assume the clutch kicked in, maybe because of the fact that the mud was quite cool.

Not too exciting, but this might help someone. I had a stick get caught up under the Jeep on the trail. I stopped to remove it but never shut off the engine. At the carwash after dark to wash of the mud, it wouldn't start. I had a wire pulled off of the starter. Quick fix for a quick panic.

Never push the clutch in when playing in puddles.
Turn off the engine if it's going to be there a while too...

I was not expecting this to be this deep. The track was slightly wider than the TJ and there was a group of ATV/UTVs right next to it that I had assumed went through...

Yeah I learnt that lesson the hard way lol. I actually knew not to shift if the tranny is submerged but I just had a huge brain fade at the time.

Although I was curious about one thing, if I was in the same situation and I'm stuck, and need to stop to get the winch out for example, would the best way of handling it? Obviously you can't just shift into neutral because that would open the clutch up. Would you just turn off engine, change gear (without clutch because the engines off), start up again in 4low without clutch, drive off? My concern would be water coming in through the exhaust whilst the engine is off.

Btw, nice job in the mud hole there, how bad was the interior after that lol
