4x4 not working

Hello everyone,

Picked up a 97 TJ about2 weeks ago. Interior was in rough shape, and I’ve just about sorted it out to my satisfaction.
I noticed that the 4x4 lever doesn’t have any resistance at all. I read over here about the linkage, but the linkage seems fine and it does move the lever that’s attached at the other end.

That being said, what else could be the issue?

Does it have a front driveshaft ?

When you shift the 4WD lever, can you clearly feel it engaging in different gears?

I think the TC lever is attached to the headlights

not at all, can’t feel a thing.

hahaha, I took those out to paint the chrome bezel. They are back in now, in fact have some LED’s on the way.

here are some pics I took. Looks like it’s connected but I may be wrong.

Yesterday I posted a thread about my 4x4 not working. I was advised to take a few pictures of the linkage, here they are....

it seems like it is connected. The little lever attached to the transfer case seems to move freely as well.

Yeah, that linkage isn’t right. Do you have a body lift by any chance? If you do, you’d be a great candidate for a cable shifter conversion.

Do you have a body lift? Your torque shaft has no visible support on the body side.

yes, there’s a body lift. But why would the lever that is attached to the transfer case move freely as well?

Look at the angle of your linkage from the shifter to the torque shaft. You need either a shift linkage drop bracket for the body side or upgrade to a aftermarket cable shifter.

Look like you are missing the Torque Shaft Bracket and if it has a body lift and no Motor Mount Lift then you are also missing the relocation bracket
