Can I just get new speakers, or do I have to get an amplifiers and sub as well?

I see from you picture you have a rag top. I would be careful with anything visible and snatchable. The cretins will cut the roof to grab anything that looks like it is worth 20 bucks.

Thats definitely been a factor. Luckily I want everything as basic as possible since I’m technologically inept.

Try an amp under the seat feeding your current 4 speakers for starters.
This seems to be the best case scenario as I’d be shocked if a stereo place actually did any form of refund. Do you know if having new speakers will improve the quality more with the amp than the factory speakers would have? Or once I have the amp would it not mattered which speakers I have?

The amp almost always improves the sound considerably. The low powered deck will distort long before the speakers reach their potential. Start there.

You’re never gonna get good sound out of a 4x6 speaker unfortunately. And the 5.25s in the roll bar won’t do much better. A lot of us go with 6.5s in the roll bar and 5.25s in the dash, with little to no modification.

The TJ is not a great for an audio platform by any means. The speakers are in horrible locations, and the drone is loud at higher speeds. Polk is a great option (have them in my Honda) but you still won’t get very much mid bass out of it in a Wrangler. I had to add a small sub and amp in my last Wrangler to get any useable bass out of it. Once I did that my system kicked even at high speeds with the top off. I hid the sub amp under the driver seat.

Good speaker and power wires will carry a signal better, especially when an amp is used. I spent a day totally rewiring my system, without changing the components. It dramatically improved the sound.

If you are using the stock head unit you should focus on speakers with at least a sensitivity of 90dB. Infinity and Polk make very good 5 1/4" speakers in that range. Hertz makes some very good speakers that you can get as well but they will be a price jump over the Infinity and Polks. Not sure they will provide next level sound unless you change out the head unit.

I think you can build a really nice set up with a good quality aftermarket head unit ($200 or so) and (4) 5 /14" speakers for another $150-$200. If you want more power you can add an amp.

I'm in the middle of this approach. New head unit.... now some speakers and maybe an amp if I need more.

The subwoofer can be upgraded in the console and leaving the existing amp or by adding a specific Kicker with an integrated amp.

There is another thread on upgrading your sound system that has a couple videos that show how to upgrade the speakers and install new head units if you want to do it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on good sound without a lot of modifications for it? I’m just now realizing that good sound quality is pretty elusive, which is fine as long as I know what to expect now. I’d just rather modify a lot of other aspects of the Wrangler before my sound system.

Typically for better "quality" that is not necessarily "louder" you need a modern amp. The easiest way to get one is by swapping out the head unit. After that getting speakers with sensitivity ratings over 90dB is essential.

If you don't need the touch screen you can get a good head unit for $200 or so and you don't need to swap out the entire center trip piece.

I started with a touch screen head unit by Alpine for $300. The new dash piece was about $80. I'm going to add speakers for about $150. I may add an amp but I'll wait and see.

This is the kind of great advice I was hoping for. I’ll absolutely take this all into consideration.

This is great advice. You got a little flashier than I’m willing to in a soft top, but this is all going to help me for sure.

Than

Thanks! This is very helpful. I think I just bought a bad brand. I got 5.25 Punch speakers up top and 4.6 Punch speakers up front (it was the only brand they had, and I didn’t want to move across the country in 5 days with what I thought were shotty speakers) and a Pioneer head unit.
Of course! I strongly recommend these paired together they are so nice it is unbelievable.

Punch and Pioneer is good together? I’ve never actually heard of Punch before today so I want to make sure we’re on the same page. I’ll be pretty happy if I made a happy mistake

sorry, i meant the polks 462 and 522 paired together make an amazing combo. but to be honest i think any speaker can be an improvement over stock

Rockford Fosgate is not a bad brand. If your head unit is low power you will either have to replace it or add an amp.

Upgraded speakers are going to be better than factory, there's no doubt about that.
But, our jeeps have absolutely no sound deadening enhancments for things like road noise, engine noise, wind, exhaust, etc. If i were you, since you are already at the point of having spent alot of money on a sound system and labor, i would highly, highly recommend that you sound deaden the tub at the very least. There's a really helpful "How-to" guide on this process and it will make a world of difference in terms of in cab comfort, and audio performance.

I totally understand, and these speakers are absolutely a-okay. Unless you want to spend more money, you are fine with these speakers. I can recommend quality upgrades for any budget, $250, $500, $1,000, just let me know.

Adding a nice little 4 channel amplifier will be a huge help. The most cost efficient upgrade would be an amplifier. This is a good one for your Punch speakers. There is a Punch amplifier out there, but its out of stock.

If you want to spend more money on sound, your next move is to get rid of the 4"x6" speakers for 5.25". You can move your current 5.25" up front, and then buy 6.5" coaxials for the rear.

A 2-ohm speaker would be great for that Clarion amplifier, so a BLAM 6.5" that @Rooscooter knows of would be a good fit.

Then, you would want to add a subwoofer in the center console, you could get a self powered subwoofer or a traditional 6.75" Kicker, but you need an amplifier. So, if you go this route you would need to get a mono amplifier and that clarion amplifier, or look for a 5 channel amplifier like this, which I would go with one amplifier over two amplifiers. Also this would be a simpler install than a self powered sub.
