Alternatives to Delphi fuel pumps?

Hey all, Jeeps been running great these last few weeks. 3 EVAP leak codes are gone. I got it back after having the frame done and my JKS 1.25” body lift just arrived in the mail today. Pretty excited about that. What I’m not excited about is having a hard start issue again.

I replaced my fuel pump assembly with a Delphi unit back in March 2019 I’d say. Come November 2019 I had to replace it again, which I didn’t get to until around December/January 2020. Thankfully it was under warranty.

It’s now June and I am experiencing the same issue again. Same symptoms and all. I haven’t hooked a fuel pressure tester up to the rail, but I really do have my suspicions.. I’m getting sick of dropping the tank and messing with that lock ring.

Looking to see what everyone else uses. I wish I could find a Bosch out there. If I’m going to keep throwing cheap quality fuel assemblies in, I’ll just spend $60 and get one off Amazon instead of $180 on this Delphi. Not sure if Delphi would warranty a second replacement. Wouldn’t surprise me if they last as long as Delphi will.

Or would it be worth my time to replace the fuel filter? As it seems these Delphi ones have an issue with the check valve not retaining fuel pressure in the rail for startup.

Thanks guys

If you no longer have your original fuel pump module, buy a used one and install the Bosch pump.

Exactly what symptom? Is the engine failing to start quickly only after it sits for hours, like overnight, or does it fail to start quickly within a very short period of time of not running like if you just run into a store?

When it sits for more than a few hours. Overnight or when I get off work after 7-8 hours. Once it’s warm it’s not so bad. Although today I got off work, went to start it an hour or so later and it gave me a hard start again. Engine temp was about a quarter of the way up to normal. I had this exact issue last time which makes me question the check valve. Jeep runs fantastic after its running though.

Sort of annoying since it seems I’m having fuel issues every 6 months. I will add that I’ve never seen the condition of the injectors, or have ever done the spark plugs on this (purchased 125k, now 144k). I had the head gasket done 1500 miles or so ago but I’m not sure if they changed the plugs. I’m not throwing any engine codes either.

Regardless I am really enjoying the Jeep. Owned this one for 3 years now and this is the first summer with a soft top. I’m in love all over again

Yes that does sound like a bad check valve inside the fuel pump. Not good to read this is happening to a Delphi since that is the brand many were starting to use after initial good reports on it. I'm to the point where I'm going to start recommending just replacing the fuel pump itself with a Bosch, though it's doubtful the Bosch pump would fit inside the Delphi assembly.

The pump on my first Delphi unit was still good and working upon its replacement as far as I could tell. Seems to be just a check valve issue in the filter. Still concerning with the fact the assembly is $180+. I’m sure others have had a better experience than myself hopefully, or Delphi quality has just gone downhill in the last two years.
I’m going to see if I can’t change out the filter in the next few weeks and fix the issue. I guess I’ll just be parking slightly downhill for a little while haha

The check valve in the fuel filter is more of a pressure relief valve and when it goes it causes the engine to not want to start right away, like if you just stopped at a store or to get gas.

It's the check valve in the fuel pump that causes the engine to not want to start after it has been sitting a longer period of time like overnight.

Thanks for explaining the difference, I actually didn’t know there were two. I guess I am replacing the whole unit again then. Might try a different brand this time unless I can find the receipt and they’ll warranty a second replacement. I have my doubts though.

Does an hour and a half count as a longer period? I had an issue starting today after getting home from work then going for a ride the 1.5 hours later. Just to check, I let it sit for ten minutes when I got back from the ride and it started right up.

Sounds like the fuel pump check valve. Just avoid store brands, Airtex, and Delphi. If you're checking on Rockauto the only one listed there right now I'd consider is the Carter P75045M.

I have a new Bosch fuel pump that seems to lose its pressure after a day or so as well. No fuel leaks or any other symptom. A PITA after spending the money and doing the work you'd hope it would have lasted at least half as long as the original.

Sounds rough, I’m hoping my outcome is a little different.. Not even like they can be replaced under warranty either. 30 day returns on this one so it’s going in my tank as soon as it’s in my hands.

Pump came in earlier than expected. Looks like it was test fit or something.. Going to drop it in as soon as I get a chance before that 30 day return window gets eaten up lol

On a side note, a customer had a Willys with 67k on it. One owner beach Jeep, frame wasn’t great

Wanted to check and see if you had better results with the Bosch over the Delphi. Looking to change my pump and wanted to see how the Bosch worked out

Bosch is the OEM pump and if you can get it it's always preferred over the others including Delphil. Delphi is proving to be a good second choice but Bosch is by far the #1 preferred brand to go with where the fuel pump is concerned.

You want the Bosch 67726 which is available at www.rockauto.com and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001C64PWU/?tag=wranglerorg-20

I just had two Delphi's in a row replaced under warranty. They are honorable with the warranty, but that is a lot trouble to go through.
