Show me your head unit

How’s the head unit performing? Sounds like a great deal.
So far so good. I wish it was a little brighter, but I’ve only driven with direct sunlight with no top, so being a little hard to see in that condition is probably expected. The only annoyance is the volume resets to 10 every time it turns off. (There is a firmware update that I haven’t run that may fix that though).

I’m still happy with it for the money. After having a head unit stolen in broad daylight, I’ll never spend more than $200 on a head unit for the Jeep, just not worth it.

Generic/Uniden unit: DVD, SD, USB, TPMS, OBD2, Wi-Fi, GPS, R/camera, dash cam, carplay.

I only have a 6.2' screen but it has the functions I wanted. GPS was important for when the phone towers are out of reach and carplay fails. I also wanted an integrated dash/crash cam so I have everything I need in one unit, including nostalgia - playing the odd Pink Floyd CD.

I am running an old Chrysler unit that has the port on back to control a remote 6 disc changer. I also have the disc changer installed, and I hacked into the cable between the head and the CD changer and added the aux input cable. I then recorded a "blank" CD, which runs in the CD changer. Using the mode button, I choose CD, and this engages the head unit to play the "blank" CD, and also allows playback on the aux cable. The files on the CD are just large empty files so no sound comes from the actual CD player. If I could find the wiring diagram of this particular model I would dispense with the CD changer altogether.

Mine is Kenwood Excelon kdc303. Super reasonable, USB, bluetooth, spotify, pandora, iheart, etc. Screen display color optional. Installed with free kit from Crutchfield, plate, plug harness, piece of cake. I really like it for having all I want but not too fancy.

I use this Kenwood.

It doesn't play CDs, it's digital only. I can listen to music from my Android phone and talk hands free (as long as I'm not on the highway with no doors). Lacking a CD player really cuts down on the weight and depth of the unit, which I feel like should make the bracket last longer.

I went single din detachable just for security in the TJ. Easy to break into an open Jeep. Double din was my preference but concerned it would be stolen in short order.

Sony single din. No CD’s so it has a cool little storage spot for your usb/iPod/phone behind the faceplate. I’ve been tossing around the idea of a double din or at least something with Bluetooth.

I like your painted bezel, and am thinking of doing similar when I install my metra unit. What did you paint it with - anything special?

I couldn’t tell you the exact brand. It was something that I had blended to paint the tailgate hinges and used the rest for the bezel.

Saw the new Alpine with the amp that's bolts to the back wonder if they hit TJs depth wise. Think I will look it up.
I would post a pick of my $35 Crutchfield special but it honestly isnt worth getting of the couch.

I've been waiting my whole life for this to be said to me (the thread title) but I always imagined it coming from a woman, and in person. 🤷‍♂️

So yesterday I replaced the factory dash speakers with some shiny new Kickers from Crutchfield. Then went and replaced the factory sub in the center console with one from Rugged Ridge. I was thinking it was going to be better and man was I wrong......i was freaking great. What a difference it made. So now back to Crutchfield this morning and ordered an new Jensen double din. This will be going in on thursday.
