Fair price for this TJ?

That Rubi looks great, but if you don't really need the capabilities, you may have some cheaper options that will do you just as well. I'm not sure you need a rock crawling capable transfer case low gear? Gotta say tho, the Rubi is a good deal, even not on the island I'd say tho I'm no expert.

what are the issues to look for, besides the soccer mom behind the wheel? source?
Everyone I knew that had that engine burned lots of oil and it has no power compared to the 2012+. My buddy's GF had a customized 2009 4 door JK and wanted to trade me even for my old 2003 TJ (27,000 original miles) on 35s, after driving mine. I drove her Jeep and passed. Gutless.

Thanks. I spent lots of money to run 35s with it and had to sell it 2 years ago for $14,000 to pay some bills. I bought it back about 6 weeks ago for $9,000. The new owner kept it in his garage and only drove it 1200 miles in 2 years. I've driven it 1000 in 6 weeks. I won't be selling it again since it's paid for now.

Wish I could find my old XJ I put an engine in and buy her back. Wouldn't know where to even look. You're lucky.

We had an agreement that he would give me first shot at it if he decided to sell it. I texted him 2 months ago out of the blue to check in with him and remind him if he wanted to sell it, I'm here. I had every intention of paying the $14,000. When he said $9,000 under the condition that he gets it back for $9,000 if I ever sell it again, I immediately jumped on it and listed my XJ on Craigslist. He said I deserved it back because I built it myself and he never had time to enjoy it. I sold my 99' XJ for $7,000 within a week to get it back before he changed his mind. I would have loved to keep them both, but I'm poor.

Man, I’d jump on that bad boy ASAP. I bought my TJ a few months back and would have loved to find a piece like that.

In California, that would go for 20k.

to get back down the lava roads and gnarly trails I made it down with the rental Frontier (I think it was), the crawling gear would be used so as not to rip the bottom of the vehicle off. I'm not too skilled crawling, but my girlfriend who generally trusts me, tried to jump out of the truck on more than one occasion. using two feet to creep around and over obstructions is the norm for me on these routes. but yes, I think I may be a good candidate for a YJ, but at 8-9$k for a questionable specimen gave me pause adequate to seek experienced input. the Rubicon seems would have resale or be worth taking back to the mainland in a few years. but a 200k+ it or YK seems would be just a pure expense. The 80/90s models I've seen rolling around have Fred Flintstone type rust.

the cost of the 2012+ seems excessive for what I need. my mainland vehicle is a 2016 Subaru 6MT, so I'm used to checking the oil at every fueling. that one drinks 0-20w IF I run at 3000+ rpm for sustained periods of time.
I'll give the JK a drive and see how it feels. I've read you can tune the trans to better match the 3.8s power band? The owner of the Rubicon shared the VIN and it checks out, but I'll need to get out of quarentine and look myself to see what it's got (or not). I'm pretty certain it will check out.
the JK has the drivetrain otherwise.

I spent too much time working on the nose riding and missed the Rubicon, but got a serviceable 2001 Sport TJ. Not a deal, but, she goes down the road very well, engine has plenty of getup, new clutch, brakes, radiator, water pump. and no weirdness, yet. $7500. never been off road much, that's for sure.

But no sign that the differential or transfer case fluids have ever been changed. got that scheduled (not going to mess with fluids in an apartment setting:). Nor lubrication of the tie rods, suspension, etc. But boy does she go straight on the highway!

How does one determine if they have limited slip differentials? My build sheet says "Command-Trac Part Time 4WD System" and "Dana M35/194MM Rear Axle".

To my knowledge all TJ differentials are limited slip. I 'll stand corrected if wrong.

Thank you. Rats, that is not what I expected. I thought they'd be open so that when put into 4wd there would be some ability to turn without crabbing and bucking. But good news for those moments with only three wheels on the lava. And so I need to get additive to put into the 80-90w that I bought which does not have any provisions for limited slip differentials. I found that only the "expensive" 80w-90 gear oils have the additive for LSDs. 18$/gallon (Carquest) versus 45$+/gallon for the ones with the additive already in it.
