New to me '06 windshield frame is completely toast. For those that have swapped in one from a 97-02 is there anything that I need to be concerned with? I've read that its a bolt in but the trim and visors are different.

Yes it’s a direct bolt in but like you said you will have to drill holes and cut slots for your trim to bolt to . I think you have to swap the tie down loop as well it’s got a different shape.

Yup, just did this a week ago. If you don't want to retain your plastic trim you can just bolt the older style frame in place. The visors are different, but you could make the ones you have now work, though there will be extra holes in the frame so I'd try to source the earlier ones.

Now, if you want to use your plastic trim, which you may want to do especially if you have the auto-dim/compass mirror to hide the wiring, there is more work to do.

1) You need to cut seven (If i recall correctly) slots into the frame. I did this by drilling a bunch of holes in a row and cleaning up with a dremel. These are for the molding clips. You'll see em when you take the modling off.
2) You will need to drill new holes for your current style sun visors.
3) You will need to drill new holes (at least the upper 2) for the side trim screws
4) If you don't change the windshield tie down loop, it will be hidden under your plastic trim and will look funny, so you should grind that off and re-rivet that on as well

Other than that, everything else just bolted right up. Note that you'll want to use heat to get those screws out of your old windshield frame. Edited to clarify: The heat will be required on the screws that mount the frame to the hinges.

Thanks for the pictures, the only thing holding mine together right now is the glass. Hopefully there is enough structure left that I will be able to use the old frame as a template.

It'll look much like the one below when you get it off. I think mine was in even a bit worse shape than yours. You only need the top for the pattern, the sides you can use the molding and there's nothing to do on the bottom

Did you by chance need new clips for the plastic molding that is on the interior of the windshield. I’m missing clips on mine and have no clue where to find a similar size
