33s on a 2 inch suspension lift

My father got a TJ 2 weeks ago and we are looking at going with a different wheel and tire setup. It is on a 2 inch suspension lift and we plan to change out the shocks but keep the same lift height. It currently is on 31s and we would like to go for 33s without changing the lift height, has anyone done this? I was thinking that with bump stops and 2 inch spacers that we should have enough clearance not to rub. It currently has stock fenders but I want to change those out for smittybilts and didn't know if they protrude into the wheel well more causing an issue.

Gonna be real tight. I'm running a 2" lift and an 1.25" body lift and its barely tolerable. I really should have a 3" spring on mine.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'm running metric 33's too. 285/70R17. Manufacture Stated size is 32.7, I believe.

It will be really tight, I agree. You should ideally have at least a 3” spring and 1” body lift, or just a 4” spring.

I added 33" tires on my jeep that has a 2" BB lift that the PO installed. Nothing rubs but i mostly drive on the road. If you want any kind of articulation you'll want more lift. I plan on a 3" suspension and 1.25" body lift to enjoy it more offroad when funds allow.

Am i reading you would add 2 inch spacers with the suspension....so 4 inches of lift total?

If you go w/ 10.50" wide tire it'll be tight on stock wheel.
12.50's won't work on stock wheel, well to my knowledge tire shops won't mount it on a stock wheel.
Both will rub in a hard turn, you can adjust your steering stops.

Sounds to me like it's JUST a 2" BB.

The tires in my TJ are 32.2'' but are listed as 33"x12.5" and on a steel 15x8" wheel. The "lift" the PO put on is a 2.5" spring spacer and that works for on road. I have a set of OME springs 933/942 that I will be installing to mediate the issue better and give me better suspension. The TJ does not off-road at all currently, but I plan on some trips to Raush park or alike just to see.

That said, the best to get the 33" tires safely is to lift the vehicle

I am surprised by all of this. I have 265/70-16 tires (31.6 inch) on Moabs and a 2 inch OME lift. I have experienced no rubbing at all. As a matter of fact I turned in my steering stops some to further reduce the turning radius. No real rock crawling but some pretty gnarly trails. I would like to go to 285/70-16 tires which are 1.2 inch greater diameter and 0.8 inch wider. I am told that I need a 1.25 inch body lift to clear these tires. Huhh? Why is 1.25 inch needed when the tires are only 0.6 inch taller? Why not just some 0.75 inch spacers? As best as I can determine I have at least 0.4 inch clearance to the control arms and swaybar so the width shouldn’t be a problem also. What am I missing here?

In my case I can get away with less lift in the front because I have the tube 3" fenders and they are easily 2" higher than stock at the point of arch-tire-contact with the fender. The rear well, different story. Is your OME lift exactly 2" or is it sitting a little higher?

I’ve posted this picture a couple times on here before but, I personally like a 2” lift and 33x10.50’s. Could you achieve more flex with a set of 31’s? Sure. But you can only achieve so much and run so long of a shock on factory mounts and factory control arms. To me, that’s worth having a little bit of a larger tire for aesthetic reasons

Do you have a body lift?

That works as well. it's all a numbers game. The Pro Comp tires I am running are marketed as 33" but are actually 32"

Yes 2 inch bump stops coupled with the suspension lift would be 4 inches altogether, unless I am missing something with that. I would prefer to avoid a body lift at this time just because it seems much more time intensive to install. I was also considering wheel spacers to clear 33x12.5 instead of 33x10.5

Are you also using bump stops or just the suspension and body lift?

Am I using Bump Stops? You mean, have I extended my bump stops? Yes, I have extended bump stops. One half inch in front and about 1.5" in the rear (IIRC). I'm not trying to be a dick, its just that EVERY jeep has bump stops (and not just Jeeps). They come that way from the factory. It is designed into the suspension to be a spot for the uptravel to end, before the vehicle damages itself.

You're missing something. Bump stops do not add lift height. See above.
