2002 4.0 5psd ~159k miles. Recently and regardless of what gear I'm in or if the engine is on, when I push the clutch to the floor it sometimes hesitates coming back up. It feels and sounds metallic, almost like when you lift off the latch of a yard gate and the latch is worn and gets bound and has a bit of sticking before it releases. I don't have any issues shifting, grinding etc and I've greased the pedal where it goes into the firewall and clutch interlock switch. Fluids look good and no leaks I'm aware of. Only other shifting issue is its not the smoothest shifting the gearshift into gear (no grinding or slipping) which I've just chalked up to its 18yrs old and basically a truck transmission.

thoughts?

Awesome! it’s not a DD, about 2k in 5 months so is this something that will progressively get worse and I can drive it until that point or do I need to plan a replacement ASAP?

It will get worse. To the point of failure and not being able to drive it. I'd replace asap.

Here’s a video, the camera makes the sticking sound much louder and sharper than it really is.

That does sound like the spring action of the clutch/pressure plate diaphragm. You need a second person to listen closely near the bellhousing to see if the noise is present down there also. If that is in the clutch pedal linkage it would have to be a return spring ior bushing has failed.

The intermittent no return says clutch to me still.

Really appreciate the help. I’ll have someone listen by the bellhousing, and just clarify the clutch always returns, just sometimes there is a brief hesitation.
Gotcha. I would definitely try to locate the noise then. It may be the linkage in the cab then. But could be a failing clutch transmitting up through the bellhousing

Here’s a clip of my phone on top of the bellhousing and me working the clutch. There’s no other background noise.

It was a bad master/slave cylinder. Swapped in the LUK kit and it’s totally silent and no sticking.
