Should I rebuild or replace my 42RLE transmission?

I've got about 135k on mine. I've wanted something done with the transmission for a while - sometimes it'll do super hard 1-2 shifts after started. Also feels a bit like it's slipping - slowing down and then accelerating.

So, which is a better idea? Getting a rebuild or a new one? Any idea on costs for either?

Transmission fluids were flushed... 18mos ago I believe. Maybe 4k miles ago. Before I left Ohio for Wyoming.

Are you throwing any codes ?
Couldn't hurt to have the pan dropped to see if there is an accumulation of sparklies in the pan.
It threw a code the other day, 0016 I think, which is why I ordered the OPDA that arrives tomorrow.

Quick vid to make sure it sounds ok.

The engine must (!) be running while checking the transmission's ATF level. The ATF level will read higher than it really is if the engine isn't running during the level check. If it's low make sure to only add ATF+4, no other form of ATF is correct.

Yeah, engine was running - and I've driven it around a couple hours ago, so it was still warm.

Think I'll run to O'reilly's and pick up some Valvoline ATF+4. A quart should be more than enough. Grab a funnel while I'm at it as well.

Being slightly overfilled is better than being slightly underfilled where an automatic transmission is concerned.

Also, 2005-6 TJ automatic transmissions have software bugs in their PCMs where the transmission controller is located. Give Mark a call at www.wranglerfix.com to see if your symptoms could be caused by those bugs. They are the only PCM repair facility that was able to find and fix those bugs. They're also a member of this forum. @Wranglerfix

I've seen him posting in the 0016 threads I've looked at. If the new OPDA didn't fix the 0016 issue, he was going to be my next call. I'm glad to see my auto Rubicon is the cheaper option with their PCM. :D

Oddly enough, the 0016 code went away on Friday. CEL was on driving to my Dr appointment and when I got in after, the CEL was off. Went away on it's own. But, the OPDA is an almost literal time bomb, so I like the peace of mind of getting it replaced anyway.

CEL hasn't come back on yet either. Fingers crossed at this point.

Picked up two new Sylvania Silver Star headlights as well. About 9mos ago, rock broke the glass on the drivers side light. Still worked, but figured I might as well do it now.

@CybrSlydr The 0016 code has to do with the cam/crank being out of alignment. The hard shift is Tcm processor failure side of the Pcm. Call me at 866-888-7710 and I will discuss in further detail.
@Wranglerfix Might be giving you a call early next month to take care of that then.

The hard shift comes and goes - I could never pin it to any specific time/action. It'll work great for months, and then it'll hard shift for a couple weeks again. Then back to normal. Infuriating.

Would the TCM also make it feel like the transmission is slipping when coming to a stop, not fully stopping, and then accelerating again?

Yes, the oem Pcm loses guages, throws high transmission temperatures, shows bad 02 sensors when good amongst others.

You can reset the Pcm by unplugging the connectors and the issues will subside for a period of time. Until it doesn’t.

Think about how hot it gets behind the battery and engine on the firewall. Couple that with sweltering Summer heat and it leads to a recipe for disaster.

I look forward to helping you out.
