What's a good (preferably light weight) 35" tire carrier?

Surface welded means that the spindle was set on top of the bumper tube and then weld was run around it. The correct way is to put a hole down through the tube so you can weld the spindle top and bottom.

I use the rugged ridge carrier, been a little over a year w/ no issues.View attachment 273305
Holy cow man, no snubbers touching and that thing is like 3 feet off the back of the tailgate... I don't imagine your tailgate and tub will appreciate that for much longer...

Looks like Exogate is $400 these days, plus another $70 to get the rugged ridge tire mount. Kinda spendy for what it is, but I've not ruled it out. My biggest concern is ruining my tailgate if I make contact, but other than that I like it.

I see in another thread DirtWorks is recommended. I could get a bumper/carrier combo for a similar price and the guy estimated it's about 80 pounds for the combo, which seems pretty light, so that could be another good option.
Doing things properly is rarely the cheapest option. I switched to the Exogate on my LJ b/c I wanted 1) easiest handling experience for my wife or kids (one hand to open, one hand to close!) and 2) wanted the least obtrusive carrier (within reason).

On my TJ, I did run a RockHard 4x4 "Patriot" carrier for a short while...

It was well made/designed based on my brief use of it, has lots of adjustment, can accommodate a bunch of accessories, and did not make a single sound off-road (nothing worse than a squeaky carrier - drives me insane!!).

The Morryde kit is ~$300 free shipping at Walmart.com or Target.com and you don't want that RR tire mount as the tire mounting surface is 12" out from the tailgate. Hyline sells a mount with the surface ~7" out from the tailgate like the OEM mount.

It’s not even a matter of if, its a matter of when. No way that’s going to last much longer with the tire all the way out there.

Check out discountbandit.com I think it's about $310 that way. That's how I purchased mine. I also have the rugged ridge tire mount.

Why wouldn’t you just use the stock tire mount with the MorRyde? That’s what I did with mine. Didn’t even need to use the bracket to raise it (might need bracket if no body lift) and 35 fits fine.

Well I wish I would have checked here prior to buying...live and learn. So is MorRyde the way to go?
The MORRYDE uses a bracket to tie the upper hinge into the cage which takes quite a bit of load off of the tub at the upper hinge. So it’s a better way to go as I see it.

Might depend on the bumper you have but most people installing a 35” on the MorRyde/Exogate will have issues with the tire hitting the bumper unless it’s relocated upwards. The exogate includes brackets to raise the tire upwards but those brackets also move the tire out like 2” further away from the tailgate which then takes lots of snubbing to secure the tire. Hence why a popular solution here is to rework the stock carrier to raise it up while keeping the same distance from tailgate which can be snubbed easily unlike when the tire is mounted 2” further out with the lift brackets.

edit: noticed where you aren’t using the brackets at all. I guess you must have a decent clearance bumper for a 35” to clear there with the stock carrier. Lots of them don’t clear hence why people use the brackets and then have problems that follow.
