Fuel pump / tank question

Believe the issue I have with long cranks is the fuel regulator on the pump/sender. I have a 99 SE so it's a 15 gal tank. Going to do the breather mod but since I am going to get a new pump should I get the one for the 15gal tank or the 19gal one? I think the only difference is the calibration on the sender

Get the 19 gallon assembly, no issues. Stick with Delphi if you're buying a complete assembly. The offending check valve is actually integrated into the pump but the regulator also acts as a check valve.

Did you run your VIN to confirm it's a 15 gallon, the 19 trickled into the SE's starting in 99 but most of the later 99's came with a 19 gallon.

I can confirm with the about 100 tanks I have filled up. Usually between 12.5 & 13.5 to fill the tank.

I know all the tanks are 19gal & the 2.5 SE had the breather hose that "made it" a 15 gal. It's an early 99 cause I had to re-order the front rotors cause they are a different size then the late 99's.

OK, so if that is the typical fill up for you then you may have the 19 gallon tank since most here will tell you that's about what they normally take as the gauge is that far off. I don't ever recall getting more than 10 to 11 gallons in my SE before the mod. Don't use the brake rotor as proof run, VIN to confirm.

Actual tank size doesn't matter at this point since the assembly fits either tank.

Good point. Didn't think of double checking the build, which I have saved. Verified it is a 15gal in the build.

Thanks

Not necessarily, the 15 gallon tank fairly rare in reality. My '97 TJ's build sheet on its window said 15 gallon tank early in the description on the sticker but further down I discovered the 19 gallon tank upgrade was included as part of another upgrade it came with.

How many gallons do you take from empty, I'm thinking 13 to 14 is typical for me.

I wait until my trip odometer says I have at least 200 and commonly 240-250 miles if I'm close to gas stations. I don't even consider filling up until the gas gauge pointer is hovering around the E or slightly below since the gauge is so notoriously inaccurate always indicating substantially less fuel than is really present.

I am about the same as Jerry. On average I usually put in around 13.5 gal when I fill up.

I'm just tired of the distance between fill-ups. I'm thinking of a pretty long road trip in the coming months so it would be great to get 300 miles inbetween filling up. Of course if I ever get around to it and get the headgasket replaced on my Commander I'll be taking that instead of the TJ.

Rest your trip meter and get a 2-3 gallon fuel can and then fill your tank up and drive until it is empty. Note how many miles your traveled and then throw in the fuel from the fuel can. Then drive to a gas station and fill your tank back up.

At least this way you'll have a better idea of how far you can travel. And take the small fuel can with you on the road trip as backup to CYA.

CYA is AAA.

I'm not too concerned that I usually only put in about 13.5 gal, I expect that with a 15gal tank. On a 3000 mile road trip though, pulling off to fill up every 260-280 miles gets to be a pain and time suck. 19gal tank shouldn't have an issue getting me to at least 300-340 miles in between.

I just finished up a 2600 mile trip and it was nice to fill up every 400 miles. When doing 10-12 hours straight it really does start to add up on time savings when you just want to get there and get into a hotel.

Then again, for the trip I am thinking I may just go out and buy a JK and keep the TJ as the spare. Need to get rid of some cars though so I have enough room. Place looks like a used car dealership as it is.

If your gas gauge is consistent it is accurate.

Pretty sure the 19 gallon Delphi pump on rock auto is cheaper than the 15 gallon one too, but if I remember correctly someone found some Bosch pumps on Amazon. I didn’t find out I had a 15 gallon tank until I ran out of gas on my way to school lol, my gauge didn‘t work in my defense. But you can just get the 19 gallon and if you have a 15 you can just cut the breather back like I did.

I have had nothing but problems with Delphi in my 03. I would completely avoid Delphi honestly.
first Delphi pump lasted about 8 months and the replacement only made it about 2-3 weeks before it failed. not even going to warranty it out again, I dont trust Delphi at all now.

crossing my fingers on the Delphi assembly I just installed in my pickup a few months ago. dont believe there is a check valve assembly in it though which seems to be the wonky part In the jeep version.

Got the pump replaced today. Original/Chrysler one was installed still. If it was original it did pretty good for 200k miles. Original was the 15gal pump per the part number.

I didn't do the breather hose mod, mine was more of a hard plastic vs the rubber hoses I have seen in videos. After seeing the above pic though I may go back and cut that hard plastic line back.

Put about 2 gal from the old tank in, rest went to the tractor. Filled it up with 16.2 gal. It did start to kick the gas pump off around 13.5 gal which is what I usually fill up around. Going to be out of the country for the next 2 weeks so going to see if I can get one of the kids to drive it around till the light comes on and let me know the mileage, then drive it till it is actually on E and capture that milage.

I'll be happy if I can get 300 miles per tank, more would be better, but that's still better then what I was getting.

None of the vent tubes are rubber hose, all are the same plastic as the tank.
