Unless my maths has let me down the shims will allow me to get to 0.060" and 0.061". A heavy bias to even number shims, but I have two 0.015" shims, and I can combine that with others to get tp 0.061". As it is Saturday tomorrow will be having a good run at it. I should get the pinion depth...

Currently I have no shims setting depth, just the original slinger and the new baffle. The original slinger was 0.062". I think I am going to try for a better pattern by pulling the bearing off, removing the slinger, repressing the bearing and then using shims behind the baffle to do that...

Took the shims out from behind the pinion, then tightened until I got above 12 inch ibs of pre-load. Now working fine for checking backlash and have got it to 8 thousandsth, which I believe is nicely in spec. Will be runjing a first pattern tomorrow. As an aside the yoke is very tight on the...

Understood, my problem has been getting the pinion nut tight enough to check backlash. Hence need for pinion yoke wrench.

I'm beginning to lose the will to live. Whilst I will leave the preload on the pinion until I have the gears set, not being able to get the big pinion nut close to torque is still giving me an issue. I am trying to check backlash, but the pinion has so little preload on it when I rock the ring...

Any thoughts on a sensible starting point for total of shims on both sides? The two master shims are 0.097" each so that gets me to 0.194" without any other shims, but if anyone has a suggestion for typical amount in addition to that as a start point it woud be appreciated.

I am using the pipe wrench technique, so that could be contributing to my problems. Have it set up so pipe wrench gets pushed up one of the bars on the tressle to hold it from moving, but maybe that is still not as good as the tool you show.
