Probably should have mentioned that the jeep has had a minor exhaust leak that I was getting ready to fix. Is it possible that a leak like that could just get much worse all of the sudden? Could an exhaust leak even cause that much noise?

Did you have this same problem yourself? If so how much did it cost to replace?

If this is the case then why does it sound like it's coming from below the jeep when driving? Also, would it make a scraping noise? I'm really praying this is not the issue. that doesn't sound like an easy fix to me. :(

It will happen sometimes while I'm stopped in neutral. It makes it mostly when I rev up to 2500 and then quiets as soon as it drops below that.

I have gone under the hood and held the throttle valve open while listening. Can't seem to hear anything when doing that although the frustrating part is the jeep has to be in the right mood to make the noise.

I should also mention now that I think about it. It's amplified if I'm using the gears to slow down.
