I'm not sure if it's solely the pins. My noise was not present when first starting but came after about 30 seconds and slowly faded. I was thinking maybe the piston being aluminum is expanding faster than the pins causing an excess tolerance and noise. After a few minutes of running the steel...

[Engine knock/slap resolved] Okay, this post is going to be winded because it's about a weeks worth of information in one. As my last post said, I recently changed my oil and the sound was more prominent and took longer to subside. This pushed me to the point of ordering a set of pistons. I...

    Help Diagnosing Engine Knock

Has anybody noticed the sound being worse after an oil change? I just changed my oil and I swear the sound is louder and taking longer to subside. I also believe that when I bought this Jeep last year that I didn't even notice a sound until I did my first oil change to it. I can't imagine how...

Looks like I missed this question. My manifold was the two piece design and had no cracks. I'm guessing they changed from a one piece to a two piece because of the cracking? No idea but it was in good shape.

I never said to anybody in here to not check their timing chain. I never told anybody that's not their problem. I'm only sharing my troubleshooting experience, what I found and what I believe to be my issue, right or wrong. The OP checked bearing clearances and changed his timing chain to no...

I was going through pictures and videos of my Jeep and found a video showing the timing chain slop. It had 1/2" of movement. The service manual reads to replace the set if there is 1/4" or more of play. I did change the timing set and the noise did not get any better. Just wanted to share the video.

It's probably me you are referring to. I've changed the cam, lifters, push rods, rockers, timing set, oil pump and the sound remains (I didn'tchange this stuff chasing the cause of the noise but was hoping it would alleviate it). I've checked main bearing clearance and they're all in...

    Help Diagnosing Engine Knock

Just wanted to show I'm still observing this thread and I'm still driving my Jeep after the camshaft, lifters, push rods, rocker arms, fulcrums, oil pump etc. replacement. Jeep still makes the noise and hasn't gotten better nor worse. I drive it nearly everyday as a daily to work. I also had...

Yeah, the main reason I pulled the trigger is because my cam had galling and abnormal wear. I did hope the lifters would also fix the noise but obviously it didn't. 😑 The cylinders looked great while I had it apart. The engine in whole looked pretty good minus the cam. I was also surprised that...

Did you do any cylinder work or did you just replace the pistons/rings? I told myself to deal with the noise but I see myself pulling this head off and putting pistons in it 🤬

Anybody have any updates? My Jeep has been running strong after the cam/lifters swap but man that start noise is really annoying me 🤣. Also noticed it makes the noise when I release the accelerator and depress the clutch. When there is no load on the pistons/crank and it's basically 'floating'.

Thanks for the comment. I'm almost sure, at this point that it's piston slap. I'm just going to drive it. I'm leaking oil from the rear mail (just replaced) or the pan gasket so I'm going to fix that and just enjoy it the best I can.

Just got back from the party and fired the Jeep up. The sound is still 100% still present. I'm going to go bury myself now.

Jeep is back together. Camshaft break in has been completed. Oil changed. Quick test drive, running great. Seems to have better acceleration and just smoother running. I can't comment on the noise if it's gone until tomorrow because I started it and went directly to 2,000 rpm and normally the...

My concern is the lobe wear. Every lobe has wear on the edge. What I've read is that this is called edge loading and is due to the crown on the face of the lifter being worn down. "The lobes will first chip and gall" which is also what my lobes are doing. Notice each lobe has a silver wear...

I'm wondering if my lifters are worn and missing their crown. Some of the lobes show wear patterns as in this diagram.

Now that I've had a few minutes to wipe the tappets off and inspect them closer I can see they're not as good as I first thought. I'm seeing pitting thag matches that of the cam lobes and I'm seeing some rings on the tappet surface of some.

The previous owner said he flat towed it and it bumped into gear. Over revved the engine and it came apart.
