Picked up a 1972 Commando two weeks ago. It has been sitting in a garage since ~1992. Changed the oil and got it to turn over and build oil pressure with starter fluid. In the process of rebuilding the carb. Got a new fuel system for it and new tires this weekend and a few other things.

Wow it has sat for more years than it was driven! Cool project, reminds me of my 1974 Cherokee..

For the CJ5, it was 1974 when the engine changes happened IIRC.

Funny thing ... in 1974 I drove a friend of mine to a dealership to pick up his new CJ which had a 304 V8 in it. We went in my 1969 CJ which had a Dauntless V6 in it. I liked the Dauntless engine but I was a bit envious.

I put one of those 304s from a wrecked CJ in my old Cherokee. Had to get a bell housing extension and a few other goodies. The 304 smoked till I replaced the valve guide seals, was a decent engine after that but not a lot of power. I was told they didn't put 304s in the full size Cherokees except for some special ordered ones for the US Postal service.

IIRC there were changes to the 304 in around 1974 that resulted in less power and it kept getting more detuned after that as the emissions requirements got more stringent. So the earlier the motor the more power it had.
