I’m sure the 4l60 is what came with the donor vehicle that the 5.3 came from.

OK since I'm not as knowledgeable of LS & GM transmission what's the next stronger option? I know the 4l60 transmission in my nieces rig went out Right around 150K miles which seems to be a little low but also normal.

Edit: Isn't it the 4l80 is next? Buit it's also larger?

What about newer transmissions? 6 speed or 8 speed or 10 speed?

No idea, I’m not the one knocking the tranny.

The 4l80 is a lot stronger than the 4l60, not just in weight rating (8000 lbs gvwr vs 6000 lbs gvwr), but also in design. For example, in basically every vehicle the 4l60 came in, GM used torque management to save the transmission instead of building it strong enough to hold the power. The newer transmissions are a lot harder to swap, do to the fact that the ECM and the TCM are integrated.
