Thanks for letting me join the group. I am not a Jeep owner, but I work on them for friends who do. Currently, a friend said he experienced a slipping issue and barely made it back home with his '04 Wrangler. I drove it home with no issue, about 20 miles shifting through the gears with no problems. It is a five speed by the way. Got it in the shop last night and this morning got under it and snapped the attached pics. Obviously, the linkage needs attention as it appears someone else has performed some sketchy stuff. Looks like a piece of hose was wire tied over the end of the shaft to take the place of a bushing. The transfer case shifting shaft was almost completely out of the linkage arm. My request for advice concerns where do I purchase the correct parts or is there an upgraded method of improving the shift linkage connections? Thanks for the help!

I snapped the loose linkage into the plastic bushing and feel it is secure. I am concerned with the other shaft detailed in the image here. Looks like a piece of hose secured with a wire tie. Is there a reliable site to go to diagramming this assembly?

Thanks for the advice and answer. So, question....if the transfer case linkage is loose and it possibly moved, drifted, whatever, is it possible the vehicle could have acted as if it were in neutral? Sorry for the dumb question, but I have very little experience with these vehicles. My friend said as he was driving one day, the Jeep acted as if it wasn't in gear, revved up high and seemed to be slipping as if the clutch was bad.

I'm not sure what "seemed to be slipping" but if it was the transfer case it would have sounded bad enough to not even try to make it back home without stopping the noise.

At least you got some information here on fixing the linkage

Yes is the answer. If the TC was in neutral then the whole drivetrain is in neutral. As long as the TC is in 2H (TC lever is full forward) that issue that you picture would not be the problem. What he describes is a slipping clutch or transmission problem.
