I have a 99 Sahara with a 32rh tranny that has gone bad. I also have a 2000 XJ with a good AW4 with selectrac xfer. Can I swap the 32rh for the AW4? Would this make sense?

There's a lot of work involved in getting the AW4 installed and working, more than I would take on. It's definitely not just a bolt-in job. Lots of wiring too. Plus it's hard to get its Overdrive to engage automatically. Not to mention it runs hotter than the 32RH. If it were me I'd find a good transmission shop who knows the 32RH and have it overhauled.
