Have a TJ with an 8.8 out of a 2000 Explorer. 2 months back I noticed I had a slight axle seal leak on passenger side. Drained the pumpkin, pulled the pin and the axle and installed a new seal. Jeep has mostly sat this summer because of work etc.
Last night crawled under to bleed the brakes and once again, oil on the rear passenger tire coming from behind the backing plate.
There's very little mileage on the new seal so it pisses me off that I have to do this whole thing again. Plus with the 8.8 drum in hat parking brake it likely means the drum shoes are coated in oil again so won't pass inspection.
Any ideas on the cause of leak outside a possible misaligned seal? Could the jeep being parked leaning towards passenger side cause a drip leak that accumulated and made it's way past the seal Should I be looking at the axle shaft to see if there's wear at the seal surface? Are the parking brake pads toast if they get oil on them? Any advice on how not to end up smelling like gear oil again for a week?
