My 97 Wrangler TJ blew the head gasket recently and I've replaced it along with thee crankshaft position sensor but it will not start. It cranks over like it's going to start but it won't. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What brand CPS?

Have you verified fuel pressure? Spark?

Any codes?

Have you checked compression and done a leak down test?

I have verified fuel pressure and spark but I may have low compression. I haven't checked the compression with a gauge. Will low compression make it not start?

Yup. You need spark, fuel, timing and compression to run an engine.

Fuel gets ignited by the spark, but it has to be at the right time in the stroke and in sync with the other pistons...and have compression so the expanding gases push the piston down and don't escape out through valves, head gasket, cracks etc.

You sure you got all the plugs in the right order? Timing is everything!

There was the crankshaft position sensor code and when I replaced the CPS the code cleared. I got the CPS at O'Reilly's. I'm unsure about the fuel pressure. I did have a broken t valve at the gas tank and I replaced it with a brass t-valve. It wants to start, it sounds like it's going to start, but it doesn't. I was going to replace the ECM, the computer that's mounted on the passenger side firewall.

Any advice, input, thoughts and help are greatly appreciated!

You generally know if it's a bad CPS when you crank the engine the RPM gauge moves. No RPM = bad CPS (or wiring.)

I have no RPMs when it cranks and doesn't start. Zero RPMs... I never really paid attention before but should it have RPMs when it's cranking? I thought the revolutions per minute came after the engine was running. I am not a mechanic by no means, just departs changer. Appreciate your help!

Yes, yes you should have RPMs and as we've mentioned in several posts your O'Reilly's CPS is either no bueno or you have a wiring issue.

I used a Napa Echlin on my 97. Lots of folks have had luck with Standard Motor Products.

Try another CPS.
