Aftermarket Sub

Does it seem unusual to others that with the number of TJ's that came without a factory sub that someone hasn't marketed a drop in sub for the factory console? I have seen lots of options that people have posted to add Base including cutting the rear seat etc. to add a subwoofer but to me it seems the console is the best location. Am I missing something?

Depending on how it would mount in the center console it’s “ok” there. There’s a few reasons I would prefer it elsewhere (though due to internal size restrictions I don’t move it):

1. Rattles - it starts to rattle things pretty loose. It would happen no matter what, but my guess is it’s faster being so close to lots of plastic and screws. Packing it in if it doesn’t attach also is a little difficult since the E-brake is in the same housing without a divider.
2. Vibrating Directly to your pelvis. I think the sound balance is a little harder and doesn’t let it radiate out 180degrees into the whole car , instead it’s 180deg into 1/2 the car.

In the spring I plan to get back in to clean up my wiring and try to rework my setup. I’ll probably hack up a mounting brace to secure it to the tub under the console instead of to the console itself.

I believe it was @JMT or @bobthetj03 who had a pretty good solution for a slim mounted subwoofer (under the seat) that didn't require any cutting,

@JMT did the powered sub in the rear seat. I adapted the center console pocket to fit a slimline 8" sub and powered it with a small amp mounted under the steering column.

Ive heard @JMT s sound system, it is clear and crisp, i was stunned how well his jeep sounds.
My Kicker RT67 subwoofer arrived and i was going to install it in the factory spot but @rasband makes a good point about its location.
Gonna hold off and rethink for now.
The console is out and waiting for a new subwoofer.

I put mine in place of the entire factory “box” (which is plastic and crappy) and it sits nicely in the console area. Install was easy on an aftermarket stereo head unit (power line from the battery, ground to the tub with a self tapping screw, power toggle line from the head and a pair of RCA cables).

However given the profile it would mount a lot of places pretty easily - under the driver or rear seat, on a tire well, ...

The TJ is space-challenged if you know what I mean. So, there are the options of using your console, but losing it as a storage space. That’s why as @bobthetj03 mentioned, I mounted mine on the bottom of the rear seat. That space isn’t used by anything, and plus, it gives the rear passengers a free massage. :campeon: @Rob5589 went this route as well and his looks great. As for aftermarket, someone has made a box that fits in the rear storage area on each side, but it eats up so much space, I wasn’t interested, but it may be an option for others.

It sounds lime the best place is under the rear seat but that won't work in my case.

i use my jeep in my business which means the rear passenger seat is removed for now so I can store supplies n stuff in the back.

So under these conditions I may be limited to the factory location at least for now

I guess I feel like while the console is valuable space the skinny / deep configuration isn't ideal so the lower section might be a good place for a sub.

My experience is the center console in most cars is much like the junk drawer at home. Junk expands to fill the space, limit the space and you limit the junk.
