Air bag problems: loose connector

My airbag light is on, and my code reader says it isn’t getting a response from my airbag control module. I’ve found this loose connector under my dash, and according to the FSM the white/black and the violet/brown wires are what should run from the module to the data link connector. The problem is, I can’t find anywhere this should plug under the dash. It’s definitely coming out of a larger part of the harness the wires coming from the module and to/from the two airbags are, as well as the wires running from the ignition. Am I missing a connector under the dash, or is it one that needs to go into the clockspring and that’s why I can’t find it? Thanks!

Looking through the 1998 FSM's wiring diagrams, I think that's the SKIM module connector:

If your '98 Sport doesn't have grey keys, it doesn't have SKIM, and that should be unplugged.

I think you should check all fuses, then using the service manual check for power at the air bag control module. Either it’s not getting power or the module has died

Remember, the Airbag Module puts out DTCs, just as the PCM does. However, not all code readers can read those. I would get the codes read before jumping to the conclusion that the Airbag Module is either not getting power or dead. There are many reasons the airbag light gets illuminated.

My experience is with factory scan tool -drb3. I was under the impression that his tool was capable but you’re right it might not have that ability. With a scan tool with the capability the Chrysler test would be fairly short having you check powers and grounds before condemning the module

Also since you found the factory service manual online maybe you can find the diagnostic manual as well. It was a series of separate books that gave a flow chart for testing. Book you need was probably listed as passive restraint manual. It is step by step and most anyone could follow

I think you directed the above comment to me, rather than the OP, but if not, disregard my response. The factory service manuals and parts manuals are available right here on this forum - in the TJ Resources forum. Unfortunately, the diagnostic manuals are not. I have those for my 2005 (I bought a three day pass to Chrysler's portal and downloaded them). At least for the '05, the appropriate diagnostic manual is called the "Body Diagnostics Procedures Manual."

My code reader does read them- I also took it to a shop and theirs wasn’t getting any signal from it. I tried the old trick of “I can’t find where the problem is so I’ll just take it all apart and put it back together”, and that didn’t work either.

Thanks everyone! I was afraid after I had poked around the FSM some more it was the SKIM connector, and based on everything else appearing fine I guess it actually is the module and ordered a replacement. Wish me luck!
