- Angry Sparrows?
- Transmission Knocking?

So I have two different problematic sounds. The first seems to be the dreaded angry sparrows. It is only heard above roughly 20mph and the sound accelerates with the vehicle, so my suspicions are placed on the front drive shaft. Others seem to pinpoint it to the centering ball in the U-joint, but I posted the sound just so I could confirm if anyone hear has had the same sound.
The second sound is a small knocking/tapping coming from under the floor. It is only heard at idle, unless the engine drowns it out when moving. pressing in the clutch seems to have no effect. I'm thinking throw-out bearing based on what others have said, but again I figured someone here may be able to help more specifically with my specific sound.
Any drivetrain experts out there to help me pinpoint the issues?

Remove the front driveshaft to confirm.
Replace or rebuild the shaft before it seizes and blows your transfer case apart.

Dunno about the transmission. Manuals can be noisy at idle sounding like a tumbler full of rocks. When is the last time the oil was changed?

Need to change oil very soon. It's been over 3000 miles.

Took out the front drive shaft and, sure enough, no more sparrows! Would it be more expensive to buy a new one or have it rebuilt? I'm not to savvy with joints, but I suppose I can research how to do it myself if the other options are too expensive.

Rebuilding is less expensive if you're just replacing the joints. I replaced my front joints and it's fairly easy. If I were to do it again though, I'd just order a new shaft from Tom Wood's.

Thanks for the advice! There are a bunch of options that I don't quite know what to do with. Would you recommend greaseable or non greaseable? How can I tell whether I need an "S" spline or "X" spline? Everything in my drivetrain is stock.

Drive around a while in 4hi just to make sure nothing starts making noise.
Do you plan on lifting your Jeep or changing it a lot? I’d hold off on replacing with aftermarket shaft if you planned a lot of upgrades.
You can buy a new CV joint and 3 ujoints as a package deal from Denny’s driveshaft for about $100. That’s cheaper than a new shaft. It isn’t to difficult just watch several videos and you can do it. Mark the shaft to make sure you put it back together correctly.
If you plan on staying stock you could go with the “s”. They have a link that explains the difference

I'd go with non-greaseable for the desert southwest and S spline would be fine for a stockish setup. Tom Wood's has good tech support if you have any questions. As @rhanna mentions Denny's sells a kit for a front end rebuild (it's where I bought my rebuild parts) for much less money if you're comfortable doing the rebuild (watch a utube video on a double cardan shaft rebuild). There are also other complete front shafts that may be less expensive than Tom Wood's. I only mention TW because my rig is fairly modified, I need a custom build to remedy an issue and it also already has a TW rear shaft.
